Spector speculates Cloutier starts in goal next season

Quote:
KINGS FACE QUESTIONS IN GOAL.

LOS ANGELES TIMES: Chris Foster recently reported the hefty contract Kings GM Dean Lombardi signed goaltender Dan Cloutier to last summer will prevent Lombardi from bidding for a high-priced UFA goalie this summer. Kings goalie Mathieu Garon is eligible for UFA status this summer, Sean Burke is forty and Jason LaBarbera has a fine minor league resume but only 29 NHL games under his belt.

LOS ANGELES DAILY NEWS: Rich Hammond also reported on the Kings question marks between the pipes, noting that prospects Barry Brust (3.70) and Yutaka Fukufuji (4.38) were stopgap measures this season who aren't ready for full time NHL action. Cloutier has struggled with injury in recent years and missed most of this season, but its believed he'll be at 100 percent for next season.

Spector's Note: Cloutier will be the Kings starter next season, so it comes down to whether or not they retain (Garon) or Burke, or bring up LaBarbera.

Probably will be Cloutier-Labarbera.

According to the "Transcript of Dean Lombardi on Kings Talk" post:

What do we do with the goaltending?

I'll tell you one thing we're going to do and I've already talked to Mark about this, the more I thought about it. If we have to we're going to carry 3 goalies here because we will not go through this again. I think we gotta go into this camp and it's going to be, regardless of player's contracts, the best guy is going to win and nobody's got that job unless we go out and maybe make a deal for a guy and say he's our number 1. But right now where we stand, if we have to carry 3 -- and we're not going to just hand that job to anybody, if Jason Lababera steps us and grabs it or whatever that's fine with us. We've already talked to some teams that have carried 3 goalies like Detroit about how to make that work, but obviously this is critical and we don't want to be in this situation again that we got caught in this year.

Well, it will be interesting to see if they (DL and MC) stick with this reasoning, and give it to the best goalie in camp (regardless of contract). I'm hoping we don't start to hear the "cloutier was playing hurt for most of the season," and "let's see what he can do when healthy," excuses from upper management (MC) during the offseason.

Look at the bright side, yet another top 10 pick is on the horizon next summer.

Honestly... some of you are acting like it came from Lombardi's own mouth. It's just a fan (who knows less about the Kings situation than us) speculating. It's even in the title of the thread.

Exactly. And thanks to KF805 for beating me to the quote of what DL actually said regarding the situation. And Mr. Lombardi has given us all multiple reasons to believe what he says.

My guess is that it's Cloutier (on a short leash) with Labs as the #1B. Burke will be up and down from Manchester depending on DC and JL's performance. If the CBA doesn't currently allow his movement, I believe a rule will be changed in time for next season. Garon will be gone to free agency - which will be best for all involved.

#1 Clouts fan.

Seriously, I know he is bad and all but I really wish to watch him play. Just not on my team.

You have to admit, it's pretty entertaining.

He's a nice guy too, besides his temper. Hoping for the best to Dan "The Man" Cloutier.

Thanks?

Best case scenario = Cloutier returns to 3 seasons ago's form of a just slightly above average NHL starter. This is the HIGH end of his upside.

Worst case = see 06/07 Los Angeles Kings.

I won't even begin to say that I know which one it will be closer to. I think DC will be given every opportunity to succeed despite the howls of protest over those who think he will remain terrible. The only thing for sure is that it'll be a nasty, snipe-y, short-fused situation next season on the HF Boards!

Bingo. Spot on comment. Plus, based on DL's comments recently, I think that LA will have 3 goalies on the roster in order to avoid a repeat of this years nightmare. I think it will be Cloutier, LaBarbara & Burke. Garon will be gone via FA.

I've never understood why teams DON'T carry 3 goaltenders. Might as well have 'em if you can afford 'em, just in case someone goes down with an injury. It's a whole lot better than the rotating goalie trio of Boucher, Leighton and Anderson. I swear, those guys play for 3 teams each season.

I hope Cloutier fails horribly in his first 10 games next year, but then you guys find a starter who plays lights out and forces MC not to play Cloutier anymore that year.

Except for one last game against the Canucks, at GM Place, where Cowan gets a hat trick 5 minutes into the game, and three bras hit Dan Cloutier, which would probably end up snapping his knee, shoulder and groin before settling into the net behind him.

What will it take to get DL and MC to finally give up on this guy and admit they were wrong and DC wasn't a good aquisition?! Any discussions about DC right now I would hope would be about how to rid the team of his contract or sending him to Manchester to be a back-up there.

Welcome, glad your first post is complaining about Cloutier. You'll fit in.

I think it will be similar to what they said with Avery or something where there is a double secret probation or better said very short leash. They will give him a shot at a few games and if he fails they'll go from there, just sucks since if they were abel to slot him in Manchester that would be 3 million extra for the UFA market.

Steven Stamkos here we come!

But we really need a top 5 pick in 2009.

Tavares, Cowen (I would love this kid on our blueline), Ferraro, Bubnick, or Duchene...
