Lundqvist also has if not the best, then damn near the best save% in the league ,since the All Star break.

It's funny, I've also noticed that we have a better goal differential (+13) than the two teams directly in front of us and Atlanta as well. If you look strictly at component statistics, we should probably be about 6 wins better than we are.

they can't score

they can't score and therefore have lost many many tough games.

there D is not the issue... The goal differential also shows how many tough games they have lost. I think it is 21 1 goal games.

They have only been blown out a few times all yr...

Here's another interesting stat.

Top 5 Goalies SO SV%

Rank---Name----Saves---Attempts----SV%
1. Theodore------3----------3------------100%
2. J. Holmqvist--26--------27------------96.3%
3. M. Denis------18--------20------------90%
4. Lundqvist-----37--------44------------84.1%
5. C. Joseph-----5----------6-------------83.3%

Interesting note:

21. Brodeur-----34---------51------------66.7%

Talk about not being clutch in shootouts.

It's pretty impressive considering all the goals they gave up from October to December, losing 9-2 to Toronto, 7-4 to Buffalo, 7-4 to the Islanders, 6-1 to NJ, and 6-5 to Pittsburgh. The Rangers weren't good at all defensively for a large part of the first half, but managed to stay in things because Shanahan and Straka were scoring at such a high pace.

Now the Rangers are depleted with inuries and can't score but are playing superb defense.

If they could score consistantly, they wouldn't be in the position they are. Balanced goal scoring from the 3 top lines has been lacking, and the 21, 1 goal games, are costly. If they would have tied 1/3 of those, think of the points they'd have.

The thing is, when the Rangers lose they lose 2-3 or 1-2, when they win they win something like 6-0.

But, the Rangers are 17-22 in 1-goal games, while, for comparison, the Penguins are 21-17 (counting OTL as just a L), which really isn't that big of a difference.

And check this out:
When trailing after two periods, the Rangers are 7-18-3 while the Penguins are 6-18-3. Which is amazing considering how often the Penguins seem to pull off late comebacks recently.

But here's what really says something: When tied after 2, the Rangers 6-7-1, while the Pens are 12-3-2.

Make that 7-7-1 for the Rangers, 12-4-2 for the Penguins!

We've also got the 4th fewest goals scored in the Conference.... couple that with the fact that the only other team currently in a playoff spot (or even near a playoff spot) with less goals for is the Devils, who also happen to be the only team with less goals against. I think it shows the kind of system the team plays.

They've taken the 5th most shots on goal in the Conference and allowed the 2nd fewest.

Rangers actually have the least goals allowed in the league since early January according to Mr. Rodent:
