IMO candidates include:
Brad Richards
Ville Leino
Vinny L
One of Richards or Carter
Clarkson
Hossa
Maybe Franzen

However most of those guys will sign for a similar cap number to what they have now, the term will just be much shorter

Vinny L and Clarkson can't be compliance bought out because their contracts were signed after the lockout.

Hossa can't be bought out because Chicago used both of their compliance buy outs already.

Was trying this out today...

CAPGEEK.COM ARMCHAIR GM ROSTER

Basically, buying out Richards allows the raises for all players to be applied, while keeping the entire rest of the team intact.

Something else you can try... If AV wants a 13th forward and 7th Defenseman (though if you were looking for a winger upgrade, then you'd scrap one of these for an ELC guy and use him instead):

I think in all honesty, it's going to have alot to do with how well some of the higher-touted prospects look in camp. I don't remember how the buyout process works, but the scouting department is gpoing to have to get some really solid looks and tape on the prospects and determine who should be cut loose, and when. If Richards does stay, then we have to cheapen the wings, and/or trade a few players away... That gives yo uthis:

No Stralman is a pretty big loss IMO. Klein can cover to a certain extent (and Diaz or McI should be able to handle #6 duties) but losing your 2nd line C and top 4 with no real replacment is a big loss for a team that will look to be getting back into the finals

Exactly.

It's odd if it's deemed waived forever as a general rule.

Boy does Mike Richards looked done for LA, he can't move.

Anyone know what is up with him? Is he hurt or is it all put on his partying?

Like our former captain, his style of play takes a huge toll on his body. Richards has been in steep decline for a while now.

It's funny how the Flyers clearly won both the Richards and Carter trades (Columbus got seriously traderaped by LA though), yet they are way worse off now than before the trades. Part of that is using the saved cap space on Bryzgalov, but the main reason is the cluster**** that Holmgren has assembled on D.

Pronger, Timonen, Carle, and Coburn was probably the best top-4 in the league. But Holmgren decided to replace puck-movers such as Pronger and Carle with stiffs like Grossman and Schenn (and later tried to rectify it with signing the corpse of Mark Streit and trade for one of the leagues worst and most overrated defencemen in MacDonald). The Flyers have an amazing forward corps that is being held hostage by a defence that can't skate or move the puck if their lives depended on it.

Timonen is still amazing and can go toe-to-toe with the best, and dominate the easier matchups. Coburn doesn't do much in soft minutes, but he performs above expectations in the tougher minutes. Streit is slightly below average in most situations, and downright terrible if he gets caught against elite players. Schenn is actually a poor-man's Coburn and isn't entirely horrible against tough comp, but does nothing with soft matchups. MacDonald is overall terrible unless he gets to play against goons and/or AHL'ers where he does very well. Grossman has been too injured the past three seasons to make a statement about his play, but his numbers are overall dreadful.

If Timonen retires this offeseason and doesn't replace him with legit #1 (which he still very much is), the Flyers will be in the hunt for McDavid.

Some disrespect for Mike Richards. Like the hawks, the kings have played a lot of hockey over the last three years. Then three 7 game series this year drawing checking minutes against quality forwards. He had a very good regular season.

Sometimes people are a step slower because of the amount, and type of minutes they play.

And I disagree with carter on that buyout list too. Is this just residual philly hate? You guys really think carter just scores garbage time goals? Crazy.

While I agree Carter is in no way, shape, or form getting bought out by LA (he's fantastic), Mike Richards is no longer the player he once was.

Though the loss of Stralman is a bit tough to handle, I think it's sufficient to say that Klein can run in the top 4... The only issue that remains is that pushes Diaz to Moore, which gives me flashbacks of Moore-MDZ, and I'm not sure we want to revisit that. I would argue that the loss of Stralman could partly (but not completely) be negated by the additional offense on the blue line from Diaz... Staal is a perfect shut down guy, and Stralman/Staal are really products of eachother... Diaz in Staals place allow Diaz to make offense, and Staal to strictly play defense.

Lastly, I'm not for disrupting chemistry within the roster, however we have minimal forward depth if Richards is gone... That being said, I'm not sure it would be a wise choice to slack on keeping several of our forwards (who perform very well together) and thus letting them walk/traded for picks just to keep a defenseman... Due to that, I left everything else about roster the same.

NOW, this all changes if Stralman is generous enough to take 3.5M-3.7M from Slats, in which case we can afford to keep Stralman, and then send Diaz or Moore packing. Klein stays on the 3rd pairing, and we go forward from there. Hell, there's even room to keep Richards if that happens, but then again if we're unable to get him to play through that entire contract, and since it seems that the cap isn't hitting $80M as fast as most thought, I would not be opposed to getting rid of Richards. It's tough, because I do think he is an integral part of the leadership here

Certainly not. But he is still a good player that fills a valuable role on that team.

If he is a buy out victim it is a financial decision and not a hockey one.

No pun intended, but he's declining in a strangely similar fashion to Brad Richards too... Has a caphit of nearly $5.8M (Brad's is $6.6M), and is only producing at a 2/3 rate of what his caphit dictates...

It will indeed be a financial decision.

Oddly enough, if he is bought out, and willing to take a $4M deal, he could be valuable to us in AV's system...

Anyone see a possibility in that??

That LA team has a lot of hard miles on it. They play a slow lumbering game in general, but they still go all out.

The Rangers can attack them with speed and take advantage. If the Kings slow it down and turn it into a street fight, it's their series, if the Rangers can keep pressuring with speed... well boys the cup is within grasp.

Richards, Stoll, Greene, Mitchell, Williams, Brown can barely skate to keep up with the Rangers. Must take advantage.

Just like Pittsburgh, they are still very good at taking away the ice and shutting you down.

One big key, if not the key, is probably to shut them down offensively. If we can keep them to 1-2 goals a game, we got a chance. If they get 3, we are in trouble.

stralman will NOT be a big loss.. guy is good but Klein can step in perfectly in that spot, and imo is the much better player.... let the young guns McIrath, Allen etc fight for that last spot.. or even resign diaz who will be much much cheaper and bring the same skill set night in and night out..

hes not worth resigning, i dont get all the love he gets on here.. hes good no doubt.. but we've been pretty damn good at next man up in that 5-6-7 dman spot..

let the young guns get the time to grow in that 3 pairing

In what universe is Klein a better player than Stralman?

Stralman, to a degree, is a part of a product of staal... Klein on the other hand has to right the ship of wrong known as John Moore, plus played on the top pair in Nashville and killed penalties.

They're close to being the same player... Though I'd argue Klein has higher POTENTIAL to be somewhat offensive with the puck, where as Stralman's shot is trash, and goes right into the goalies logo

Hfboards.

Thank god av doesn't seem to think the same, or they might not have even made the playoffs.

it's not that Klein is better than Stralman... they are close to being the same player.

As far as Stralman vs. Klein, Stralman is better defensively AINEC. Like.. really not even close. Offensively, Klein is the better player. He's more able to join the rush with speed and has a better point shot. Stralman's biggest weakness as a player is his shot, which he completely makes up for by hip checking everyone into oblivion.

I really, really, really want Stralman resigned. He's so steady and consistent back there. It gives us the option to use offensive PP specialist type guys (Diaz, Moore) etc on our 3rd pairing in limited minutes. I'd actually like to keep Diaz as well; his right handed shot needs to be utilized on the PP simply because this team doesn't have many right handed shots. When Moore gets back from suspension I would still play Diaz unless he starts getting eaten alive by LAs forwards, which I don't see happening. He's the perfect PP specialist type guy

Stralman has a bomb of a shot. The problem is it's not accurate

A few years back Stralman was almost out of the league. He got dropped without contract from the Devils. Klein is a tenured player who until very recently was in the top 4 of one of the better defensive corps in the league.

Now, the players are very close. But if you paired Stralman with Moore, and Klein with Staal, I think you'd see a better public perception of Klein. Girardi looked like **** playing with Del Zotto.
