Multiple Offers for FLA/BUF #1/#2 pick

per Sportsnet
Quote:
According to sources at the NHL combine this weekend, several teams have aggressively pursued trades with Florida and Buffalo, owners of the first and second overall picks respectively. Panthers general manager Dale Tallon has said from Day 1 that hes entertaining all offers, though he has given no indication exactly what the price tag might be, nor what make or model hes in the market for. For his part, Sabres GM Tim Murray has shuffled the deck aggressively since he arrived in mid-season. The prevailing wisdom in the marketplace is that Tallon and Murray might be motivated dealers.

One scout aware of multiple offers for the top two picks said, The going price to move up into those [first two] spots would be picks a high first and a second or third and an established player that helps your top two lines.
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/junio...-at-nhl-draft/

Interesting in what has been deemed a weaker draft, that there's this much interest in the Top 2 spots.

You would have a very different opinion from most NHL teams. Oilers view it as 6 top guys, Flames believe the number is closer to 8. I haven't heard about other teams.

Teams would have to pay a huge price. The difference from the top to say 6-12 is huge.

In hindsight look at the 2008 draft. Would you rather have Doughty/Pietrangelo or one of Boedker, Wilson, Filatov, Bailey, Hodgson?

Most scouts would agree that Ekblad is a can't miss defensive prospect. Guys like Doughty almost never get traded, so its worth the risk to try and trade up even if Ekblad doesn't achieve that level of skill.

I don't think either team would drop further than 8 though.

So something like the 1st overall for the 3rd overall, a 2nd and Yakupov? That seems excessive. I don't see the 1st overall bringing back another high pick (presumably top-5) and a top-6 winger.

Yes I think that it's likely because those top picks are the only place where teams see themselves being able to get that top end help because those high end players just dont get traded like they used too. Ekblad is looking like a cant miss top four guy with solid potential to be a top flight franchise defenceman. Those guys don't get traded once drafted but picks do. Takes longer to become an effective trade but a good shot at paying off a big return in the the future.

This is utterly horrible. Yakupov is worth the 1st alone. Maybe Yak + 2nd for 1st overall.

I would do 3rd OA + Musil for 1st overall. But that's it

I don't think they mean a prospect like Yakupov. They want someone who would help them now.

Like if the Isles wanted to move up, 5th + Grabner + 2nd + 3rd

I doubt the Islanders do that. But Snow has offered every pick in the draft to move up before. If he really wanted Reinhart/Ekblad, he may do that.

just because yakapov was picked 1st doesn't make him worth the 1st.

for a 3rd for 1st oilers would have to add marincin/klefbom and a 2015 2nd/3rd

if they want to get the 1st without including the 3rd then yakapov+2015 1st+gagner(retained)+marincin/klefbom

"This is the toughest draft to gauge that I've ever been involved in," McDonnell told NHL.com. "Guys that maybe are tenth on your list, could go No. 30 or vice versa. It's not a big gap, like some years where it drops off. It's pretty close all the way through and I think it's just going to sort itself out at the draft table once teams start taking different players. You just hope something you have falls to you."

Weird draft to pick since it had a bunch of studs. I think after Stamkos - Karlsson maybe the next best player from that draft (15).

1. Stamkos
2. Doughty
3. Bogosian
4. Pietrangelo

12. Myers
15. Karlsson

22. Eberle
27. Carslon

32 Voynov
38. Josi

51. Stepan

82. Henrique

186 Demers

I only picked it because of Pietrangelo/Doughty. They were highly touted by scouts. Karlsson was a steal at where he was picked.

I think 09 is a better comparable to this draft minus Tavares. But I am still certain most teams would rather have Hedman/Duchene/OEL than Glennie/Cowen/Paajarvi/Ellis.

Going fro 1st to 3rd have been down int the past...usually what was given up has been a 2nd or a 3rd.. i dont see Yakupov getting traded to do that.

Give up a 3rd and Kadri (something Buffalo doesnt need) and you expect Buffalo to send something back---keep dreaming.

Since Buffalo holds that pick such a trade would never happen.

Try #8+2015 #1(unprotected)+Gauthier + something else for #2.

I dont think Buffalo gives any serious consideration to moving out of 2, unless they get a solid overpayment.

That being said, it wouldnt entirely surprise me if Buffalo tried to find a way to get 1 & 2. They could have the pieces to do it.

That's an insane overpayment

Two young top six forwards, a very good defensive prospect and a 2015 1st Rounder which will likely be very high in a very good draft for (presumably) Ekblad?

Wow sportsnet with their spot on coverage of the NHL saying people want to trade up to the top spots in the draft. Wonder how they got that doosey

The speculation around the top picks being available for trade happen every year and very rarely does it ever happen. I don't see the Sabres trading Reinhart/Bennett from the two slot.

There's no indication whatsoever that Murray is interested in dealing the pick. In fact, in a THN interview, he said he didn't want to be sitting at the front row at the draft in 4 or 5 years but admitted "we need a couple drafts under our belt" and said that he expects to use the high pick(s) (this was before the Isles announced their decision) to take the BPA. If anything, he'd like to package our multiple 2nds to move back up into the 1st or get a younger NHL player.
