Skate heaven/ graveyard

What do people do with their skates when their skates get retired or go off to the big rink in the sky?

Just have a new pair and don't think I'll ever be donning the last ones again. Have an older pair up as a decoration in the man cave along with some sticks, but it doesn't seem warranted just throwing them out in the trash like you would a pair or worn out old tennis shoes.

Does anyone donate them to charity so that some barefoot kids in Africa can play hockey, do you sell 'em on second hand, hand 'em down, throw them in the cupboard with all the rest to sit there forever or out with the garbage?

Ebay. I've got 2 pairs at home I need to sell. RBK pumps and Bauer X60 LE's which have been replaced by RBZ's. I have only kept one pair, white Nike Federov's, they have no value and are still the only pair of skates I've had where I had zero foot issues.

In the past I've just tossed 'em because they were useless by that time. Right now I have 1 pair of RBK pumps that will serve as a backup to my new Bauers, and another pair of RBK pumps that are without a chassis.

OK, what about equipment that is a season or 2 old. Things like pants, shoulders, and shins do wash relatively well and there isn't anything wrong with them I am just considering getting "better" equipment but it seems such a waste to get rid of the old stuff.

Can you legitimately sell stuff like that or is everyone going to say "used elbow pads...GROSS!"

I sold an old pair of skates for 20 Euros and my buddy was really happy.

I just want the stuff out of my apartment and into a good home. If I can sell 3 or 4 items and cover the cost of 1 new then I would be quite happy

I buy and sell/give away used gear frequently. I know lots of guys who do. New jocks are probably a good idea though

Not sure about where you are, but around here there are a few used sports shops that take in old skates and equipment for either consignment, cash or trade.

I really wouldn't wish my last skates on anyone unless I wanted them to suffer. I've binned a bunch of gear this year but it was mostly in a state of disrepair, though the skates seem to have more nostalgic or sentimental value, like someone might appreciate finding them in the attic one day.

I had a pair of grafs for 15 years and they needed new steel and holders so it was time to retire them.

I cremated them on a bonfire at my sister's house while saluting them with liquor.

My brother-in-law is making knives out of the steel which is all that remained.

I keep an old pair in the car. They're too far gone to sell to anyone, but they have saved me from rental skates when I've traveled home over christmas or whatnot without hockey gear, and people decide to go to a public skate or the outdoor rink.

My new pair of skates will never last 15 years so I probably won't be as attached to them as the Grafs. In that case I'll just dump them or donate them if they are not too bad. The Grafs needed $200 of holders and steel so no point donating them.
