I mean, on the heels of an historically awful season, a little spring cleaning was definitely in order.

Murray was on TSN radio in Ottawa today and he said that he, "let Nolan run with the coaching staff and he did that today."

I'm OK with 3/4 of the firings, however, Corsi has a great record so I think it may be a mistake. Time will tell.

Thanks for this. Not surprising.

RT @LaurenBrill4: I've been told by someone close to the situation that Joe Sacco was offered a job as a pro scout and Jerry Forton as a college scout. Both will inform the organization of their decision after the world championships

Not entirely true....
Regier: May 1997 - Nov 2013 = 16 yrs, 6 mos.
Corsi: Aug 1998 - Apr 2014 = 15 yrs, 8 mos.
Ruff: July 1997 - Feb 2013 = 15 yrs, 7 mos.

Based on the earlier reports last week of the pending dismissals, the omission of McKenney's name today seems surprising - not only because he was cited in the reports but because Nolan and Murray again referenced players conditioning in yesterday's PC.

Nolan is applying the "olive branch" principle that Regier used on him of a lame duck offer intended to motivate a voluntary resignation.

That certainly appears to be the case whenever watching teams during time-outs - the head coach is often just standing in the background while one of the assistants are drawing up a play.

Just a thought, but wouldn't be surprised, that's for sure.
I'd be surprised - mostly because Housley has no history with Nolan. It wouldn't make sense that Nolan fired the current staff because he wanted guys he's familiar with, only to hire someone else he's not familiar with.

Same story with Hawerchuk as Housley - Nolan has no past with him.

Just like Ruff wasn't likely to consider an assistant coaching job after being a head coach for so long, I don't see Trotz taking a demotion - or being out of work that long.

McKee didn't get along with Rolston in Rochester - enough said.

That would seem to create a situation of friction for Nolan-Murray IMO - as if the GM is inserting his own guy as an insurance marker for the future if he eventually wants to fire Nolan. I would suspect Murray realizing that and just being blunt enough to let Nolan bring in his own team. If Nolan eventually is fired, his staff would go at same time.

I think this is all Ted. No Murray influence.

Though part of me still thinks Murray felt somewhat coerced to retain Nolan permanently. That's a different discussion, though.

I don't think it's quite like that. Those two are under contract so if they're willing to play out their contracts as scouts, providing some value to the team, that's slightly better for the org than just throwing money down the drain. It's unlikely they accept but it doesn't hurt to offer.

Another name to consider is Danny Flynn who coached with Nolan in the OHL with the Soo Greyhounds and in the QMJHL with Moncton. Bringing a guy with you to two different leagues tells you how much he values Flynn.

He is on the original list I had of people with Nolan connections. Definitely a guy to consider.

Nothing but crickets on this front with respect to any rumors of new assistant coaches.

I'm sure it's something like that. There may also be candidates that are in the finals, though unlikely, or candidates that are waiting to see if any head coaching position open up.

It will be a strong staff that will help us long term. This year is another rebuilding year so a staff that helps the long term future is vital

So, where does Bylsma go from here? Besides Pittsburgh, there are three coaching vacancies in the NHL — Vancouver, Carolina, and Florida.

It’s hard to believe Bylsma won’t be a strong candidate to fill at least one of those vacancies. In fact, it’s possible all three teams will pursue him, and he might have to pick one.

Consider:

One of the six teams that Vancouver’s Ryan Kesler was reportedly willing to be traded at the deadline was Pittsburgh. And that was after Kesler played for Bylsma in Sochi. Would hiring Bylsma, combined with a free-agent addition or two, convince Kesler to stay? Remember that new Canucks general manager Jim Benning thinks he can turn things around “in a hurry.” That wouldn’t be so easy without Kesler.

Or, might Bylsma prefer Carolina, where he’d be reunited with former Penguin Jordan Staal and US d-man Justin Faulk? The Hurricanes’ roster is hardly bereft of potential, even if the job wouldn’t be as high profile.

Florida can’t be completely discounted either. There’s young talent there, not to mention new ownership that’s promising to spend money to improve the roster. There’s also Roberto Luongo in goal, while Vancouver and Carolina are far less certain at that position.
I doubt Bylsma takes a gig as Nolan's assistant coach. My guess is that if he doesn't get a head coaching gig before the season starts, he waits for a mid-season opening.

I'm pretty sure Bylsma will be snatched up by someone for a head coach job real soon.

It was not a serious comment. I meant to follow it with

Bylsma is over-qualified for an Asst. job, especially with a bottom dweller team.
