In terms of assets given up, this would have been the biggest "pay to take" cap dump in history as far as I'm aware. Too bad for Calgary that he wouldn't waive.

You'd have been giving up more than money. It'd have required a hit of dead cap space spread over several years. As his contract was signed post-CBA, it was not eligible for a compliance buyout.

At least we're starting to see the asset value of cap space or dollars. Burke said last year that it was hard to be a bank for other teams because he didn't know what the market value of 1 million dollars in cap space was worth.

Now we're starting to see this. It might be the new "buyout" and method to maneuver around the salary cap. Very interesting indeed.

Maybe they planned to use his contract to reach the floor and ship him to Alaska of the ECHL.

Point is Calgary has tonnes of cap space and a bank vault of money, can't blame them for checking how cheap other teams might be.

#1. You have no idea what was going the other way.

#2. The only reason the deal fell through is because Ribeiro wouldn't waive.

I hope if the Arizona deal happened that Ribeiro was going to be bought out by the Flames. Otherwise I am glad it didn't fall through!

I'm pretty sure Arizona accepted the Flames deal of Ribeiro + the 12th OA pick for ??? (2nd round pick maybe?) otherwise the Coyotes would not have brought it to Ribeiro for him to reject.

You don't throw players under the bus like that. Malone was arrested and you didn't hear a peep from Yzerman, Ribeiro's issues are more marital and Maloney reveals all sorts of stuff. Terrible.

For what? The 4th overall? I'd have said no as well if so

Good for Calgary. They are rebuilding, they have no use for Ward or Ribeiro, not to mention now they can sign Ribeiro for free.

Calgary offered to take on Ribeiro's contract if Phoenix included 12th overall.

Calgary offered to take on Ward's contract is Carolina included 7th overall.

Both Phoenix and Carolina said no.

Reading comprehension, boys and girls. The Flames were offering to take on the contracts of Ribeiro and Ward in exchange for the Hurricanes and Coyotes 1st round draft picks. The Flames offered a 7th round pick to Carolina in exchange for Cam Ward and 7OA, not sure what the offer was from Calgary to Arizona but they were asking for Ribeiro and 12OA. Essentially, they were willing to take on salary in an attempt to quicken their rebuild. Pretty smart move.

As mentioned, there is already a thread on this.

Yeah I was wondering where they'd play him if they got him. The Flames already have Monahan, Backlund and Stajan at centre. At this point I don't think Ribeiro is better than any of them. And I can't really see him on the 4th line.

I don't think it's only "marital" issues.

A source told FOX Sports Arizona's Craig Morgan that Ribeiro was, "late for practices, missed meetings, missed buses and even engaged in a shouting match with Tippett in the locker room after a game in Colorado."

While any one of these alleged offenses can derail a career, the latter is the most concerning. After signing his four-year deal last July, Ribeiro raved about reuniting with Dave Tippett and named the coach as one of the biggest reasons he chose to sign with the Coyotes. The souring of that relationship contributed to his exodus from Arizona and does not bode well for his attempts to find a new NHL home.

Can not post the source. But there was a tweet suggesting there was a situation where he was a bad influence off the ice

Reading comprehension is a *****. Carolina said no. Phoenix agreed, but the player refused to waive.

The Carolina thing I can understand. Ribeiro's decision is just crazy. I think this may have motivated Maloney's comments as it was a dumb, dumb, dumb move on his part. There are only so many jobs available in the NHL and Ribeiro turned up his nose at one that would have continued to pay him handsomely. Seems like a pretty silly move and not well thought out. Maloney just put the final nail in Ribeiro's NHL coffin.

Haha it's funny that you call me out on that, because I had the same reaction reading this thread yesterday. I knew that, too. I guess I just wasn't paying attention this morning when I posted that. Weird.

Oh my god you've made it worse idiot.

Not in exchange, it was Ribeiro WITH the 12th overall pick in exchange of a lower pick so that Arizoba clears up cap space.

Not to rehash the past but I wonder if Carolina would have said yes to the deal like this...

Ward
AND their 2nd rounder

To Calgary for the rumored 7th round pick.

Carolina would get rid of Wards contract which they probably wouldn't without adding the value of a pick.

...Calgary was getting the pick. I don't see the parallel.

Right, what I am suggesting here is essentially the same trade that the Flames offered Carolina except the first round pick going from Carolina to Calgary would be a 2nd not a first.

Curious as to if that would have made the cap dump for pick more palatable for the Canes.
