I just hope they don't put Mike green and or pikagirl together. That pairing will cause trouble for the capitals.

That's another thing. Orpik's style of play makes the 5-year term even more crazy. His best attribute is his physical play. But he's 33 years old, who has relied on physicality his entire career. Guys like him break down early, and usually quite quickly.

He doesn't have the smarts or the puck skills to fall back on if his body can no longer play a physical style.

Still debating the worst signing of the day, this one or the Bolland one. Not sure what the Caps were thinking. Orpik is horrible

Joe Sakic said that Colorado was involved on Orpik, but Orpik picked Washington for family reasons.

Bolland is actually a capable contributor to a team's ability to win a hockey game (not consistently per se, but definitely capable). Overpaid, most certainly. But Orpik is so disturbingly unable to help a hockey team win any games that it's a shock any team gave him a 5 year deal. The fact that he's garnering a higher cap hit than Marian Hossa and John Tavares and Ryan Kesler is just icing, and has absolutely everyone baffled beyond belief.

Orpik unable to contribute to winning hockey games?? The guy has a cup and went to the Olympics twice.

Last year no team coughed up more late game leads than Washington and a few late season vs Philly and Pittsburgh come to mind. Now they've upgraded enough on defense to potentially put a stop to that.

Orpik can still skate and he adds a bruising element that makes opposing teams change the way they attack. No other Caps players will consistently take the body and now they have a guy who will.

Again it's not your money people. The Caps were in the hunt last year until about 3 games left in the reg season. Just took two top 4 guys from a division rival,Philly hasn't added anything substantial,NYR seems like they broke even. Isles, jackets and Canes have yet to make big moves. So ATM the Caps look poised to return to the postseason.

The depth on defense now is great,Trotz has a decent track record with defenders/goalies and the team has many options as well as being able to roll three solid pairs.

The contract is long but don't act like a team won't get creative and find a way to bury it on Ltir if it came down to it. Heck I'm sure a phone call to a fellow owner Daniel Snyder could lend some advice as he is one of the best business minds the sports world has ever seen as far as creating cap space and finding loop holes.

Make the jokes all you want but the Caps will be much harder to play against and an already gifted offensive team just patched it's biggest weakness. Not cup contenders ATM but look to be one of the most improved teams from last year.

Meanwhile, Brooks Orpik repeatedly asks his agent to repeat the number, believing something insane to be in his ear. The agent confirms the offer. Orpik shuffles the notepad next to his phone with the offers from other teams he's jotted down. He notices that, added together they approach being half as long and half as lucrative as the Washington quote. He accepts the deal.

When the paperwork comes through, MacLellan realizes his error and starts from square one, and pitches an offer to Niskanen.
Lol..if we're going that route, maybe he though the 5.5 @ 5 was for Niskanen and not Orpik .

Hate to see injuries but the first time Orpik lays out your teams superstar in the corner...laugh about how much money you wasted then.

Once upon a time the Caps had a decent lead on the Penguins in a playoff series in which Orpik broke Semin's thumb. Not saying that was the difference in the series at all but just want to point out that he's the type of player you absolutely hate to play against.

Pittsburgh has been a really good team with him in their top 4 and true he may be losing a step look at it like this.

Nate Schmidt,Conner Carrick, julienne Broulette and Patrick Wey were the defenseman Orpik just replaced.

Orpik is a very good solid D-man. While the 5.5m is a little high this is free agency where everyone seems to get overpaid. The term is the issue for me. 2 year deal and this would have been a good signing even at 5.5m. 5 years is simply way to long...

Welcome to the Trotz era Washington. Where D rules all!

No.

The Caps would have been more improved without Orpik, TBH.

He hasn't replaced anybody because his health will not permit him to actually play games. He actually should be sent from Pittsburgh with a "Fragile Handle with Care" Label on his forehead.

+/- can be a very bad statistic to compare players etc. HOwever. When a guy leads the league in goals and leads the league in - that is cause for some serious concern. That has never and will never happen ever again unless ovi duplicates it.

Just came here to post again on how awful this contract is.

I think the only positive thing about this deal is that someday I can tell my grand-kids that I was alive to witness such a heinous act. I would have rather the Caps just donated money to charity and had us play at a lower self-imposed cap hit.

**As for the guy that said Orpik injured Semins thumb....IIRC he slashed him...a dirty slash.

***What I really don't get- when TOP D-MEN are on the market, the D-MEN that can really bring a team over the hump, the Caps don't even show interest. And now, during an off-season in which there wasn't really any great FA d-man, we shell out all this money on TWO MEDIOCRE d-men? Absurd.

July 1st - The day for LOSERS.

FWIW. Was listening to Dejan Kovacevic on Pittsburgh sports talk show today.

He mentioned what high regard that the Penguins defensemen had for recently fired, and current Wash Caps asst. coach Todd Reirden.

Dejan said that he talked with Brooks Orpik and Matt Niskanen, and said both got higher offers than the Caps offer, but both choose the Capitals because of Reirden.

Kovacevic said that the higher offer for Orpik came from Colorado, and for Niskanen, it was the Red Wings. (will post in Niskanen thread as well)
