If folks were re-doing the 2013 draft, where would Wennberg, Rychel and Dano fit? (Yes I am aware this list will change over the years)...

I see Wennberg passing Horvat, Domi, Morin, and maybe Morrissey, and getting passed by Mantha, to end up about 11th.

I agree with that. Harder to do the other 2 though

The cynic in me wonders if he really is trying to become a UFA.

Me too. The CBJ had him come to the playoff series against Pitt and when asked about it Reilly said it makes want to make it to the NHL. He could have said Columbus in particular. Hartsburg saying that he is ready now for pro hockey is another example. I may be reading way too much into these things, but it seems to be a red flag for some.

Me three. That is a risk with these college kids. They have a good college career and people start singing their praises they start to think. Hopefully not the case but until he inks the deal it will be an issue.

It sucks for the Jackets and it is a stupid loophole.

But, from his point of view, I can't really see how it's not to his benefit to go to UFA.

While its hard not to think that. I really just think he wants to finish schoool. I mean he's playing with his brothers so he may want to just complete his time there with them as this is his last chance to play with them(most likely). Its not like he couldn't sign with Columbus afterwards. And by the time hes done with school he could basically walk onto the Jackets and take a roster spot.

The good news if my cynicism is correct-The free agency period for Reilly would open August 15th, 2015 so we could surely punt on him and get an okay return if it becomes clear he won't sign.

I'm pretty certain the August 15th date does not apply here. If Reilly leaves after his Jr. year (next year) the CBJ have until June 1st to sign him. They have 4 June's after his draft year to sign him since he went to Penticton (or however you spell it). Had he gone directly to college the August 15th date after his 4th year would apply.

If he improves his defensive game a little he has a chance to become a top pair d-man with his skill set. He is very similar to Duncan Keith aside from his defensive game. I think he'll sign with CBJ and be in the lineup after 1 year in the AHL. That would likely push Wiz, Tyutin or JJ out the door in 2 years. Not that it's set in stone but I could see him replacing one of the higher value guys. In 2 years I expect Murray, Erixon, Savard and Prout to be fairly well established on the blue line allowing Reilly to come in on the bottom pair.

I think it's pretty clear that our top 5 or 6 prospects appear to be:

1) Wennberg
2) Milano
3) Reilly
4) Rychel
5) Dano
6) Bjorkstrand

Bjorkstrand needs to get stronger and improve his 3 zone game whereas I think Dano has a 3 zone game and as a C gets the edge for me. The top 3 are easy choices for me....

On closer inspection, you're right. Eeep/

Are Forsberg and Erixon further down this list? Or are you just considering the younger guys?

Looking at 2013 redraft thread somebody actually had Rychel Wennberg Bjorkstrand and Heatherington in their top 30 with Dano as a HM.

That would be crazy if we hit on 5 players in the first 3 rounds.

So either until June 1 next year (he leaves school) or the following year (he goes back for his 4th year) the Blue Jackets have exclusive rights? Depending on the situation, if he doesn't sign by June 1 he is a UFA.

So the risk is still there it just could be next year or the following.

Yep, this does nothing but assure me he won't sign here. We need to package him at some point.

Why do you say that? There's absolutely nothing wrong with a kid wanting to finish his education. .although it is very rare in the nhl, its not unheard of.

If I'm Reilly I go UFA. Why wouldn't you? Its more money, and you have a much better chance to crack other rosters that don't already have Murray, JJ, Erixon and Tyutin as LHD's.

If he signs with Columbus now he makes possibly half as much (or less) and gets stuck in the AHL for longer.

It was not a sales job, the club insists, even though Reilly said the pulsating arena “really got me excited for what it’s going to be like in the NHL.”
Says NHL, not Columbus. Seems like a calculated move.

Quote:
Reilly said he hasn’t made any plans beyond next season.
The most telling. When the thing happened with Matt Calvert and his overage season in the WHL, he assured us he was going to sign with us. Reilly hasn't, and seems like he won't make such promises.

I would be surprised if he signs with us.

No its not. He can only get an ELC even if he hits UFA, which even if you give him the highest bonuses, is only on par with what Columbus could offer.
