Has the Best Player Ever Played With the First Overall Pick In His Rookie Season
Inspired by the revelation that (unless he gets traded) Andrew Wiggins, the #1 Pick in the most recent NBA Draft, is going to have the opportunity to play alongside the best player in the league with LeBron's return to Cleveland . Has this ever happened in the NHL?
In 2003-'04 Fleury played on the same team as Mario. However, despite a brilliant 2002-'03 Mario wasn't the best player anymore, I would think most thought Forsberg was. No one knew what sort of year Mario would have in 2003-'04 so I guess it could be considered close at that time.
The only other one remotely close that hasn't been mentioned that fits the title of this thread would be the start of 1969-'70. Rejean Houle's rookie season with Beliveau as a teammate. You'd have him top 5 still, but not #1 anymore.
Would 2000-01 apply for Jagr and Lemieux? Jagr was by many considered the best player in the world at the time (coming off back-to-back Pearson awards and 3 consecutive Art Ross trophies) and was playing with Lemieux who was the former no. 1 Draft Pick.
St.Louis was considered the best player in the world before and has played with two former no. 1 Draft Picks in Lecavalier and Stamkos.
