It depends if he has a normal 2nd season or goes Stamkos.
And if he goes stamkos not one of us will be griping about having 850K less to work with next year.

From Capgeek:

Ryan Wilson is 27 years old on the buyout date of August 6, 2014 (last possible day to buy him out), setting the buyout ratio at 2/3 and the total buyout cost at $1,583,333 spread over 2 years. His contract was originally valued at $6,750,000 beginning in 2012 and ending in 2015, with $2,375,000 remaining from the buyout year forward.
Buy-out cap hit:
2014-15: $666,667
2015-16: $791,667

If we bury him in the minors we pay full salary of 2,375,000$ and we have a cap hit of $1,475,000 (the first 900k$ don't count towards the cap).

So a buy-out saves $791,667 in real dollars and implies a total cap hit of $1,458,334 (slightly lower than burying him in LE).

If the team wants to save money they buy him out. If they wish to keep him as an insurance policy they can send him to LE. With his "high" salary I think he goes through waivers w/o a claim. Also, maybe we could trade him with retained salary (~1M$?)...

Question: In a trade with retained salary does the selling team retain the same cap hit as the retained salary?

The tricky point here is that the Avs have to make up their minds BEFORE training camp.

I think so, retained salary is also the cap hit.

I'm pretty sure they won't buy Wilson out. If they were it would have been done when they could CBO. Just give him a chance and send him down like Hunwick. Saving 900k cap is still something I suppose.

Yeah, I forgot that he was eligible because of a pre-CBA contract... Maybe the CBO deadline was too early for them to decide (i.e. before free agency).

Good chance he'll be buried in the AHL unless he has a terrific training camp and Elliot bombs. In my mind the 7th D spot is Elliot's to loose.

No point in buying out Wilson. One year left on the contract. Played well in the playoffs. If he steps it up in the off-season then we're looking at something good. If not then he goes to the AHL and helps out there for a year like Hunwick.

Just an FYI for those with the NHLnetwork. It looks like they will be showing a LE game at 1:00 mountain time today. The guide is not right a lot of times with these replays on the NHLnetwork though. Hopefully it's right.

They are about to show the AHL all-star game as well. Our new addition Street played, as well as W. Westlund.

Agozzino-Hishon-Everberg (solid 1st line with skill and nice power forward)
Bourke-Street-Rendulic (line with a lot of potential, with a vet center)
Carey-Henley-Smith (two defensively responsible players in Henley and Carey with a little offensive punch in Smith)
Heard-Sgarbossa-Muers (feel bad putting Sgarbossa on the 4th line but their isn't much room for him elsewhere)

Siemens-Whoever doesn't make the NHL squad (Guenin, Wilson, Redmond etc.)
Stollery-Gervais
Corbett-Beaupre
Lauridsen

Aitto
Pickard or whoever is left, not sold that Pickard will be back

That's actually a pretty solid team. For the first time in a long time I'm actually a little excited to see our AHL team and what it can do.

It's not looking good at the moment but I'd really like to see a new coach. I think the AHL team needs someone more on the same page as Roy.

That first line should be renamed the midget line. Just switch Sgarbossa and Everberg and be done with it.

The Monsters have changed divisions. They are now in the Midwest with Milwaukee, Rockford, Chicago and Grand Rapids meaning they are with the farm teams of Predators, Hawks, Blues and Red Wings. I'll miss the goon fest with Rochester, Toronto and Hamilton but this has the potential to start some nice rivalries, these teams already get a bit nasty with eachother.

Just read about that as well, I think this is the right thing for our AHL team. Plus as you mentioned it will be good for rivalries going forward in our division.

Better, unfortunately. I don't know about changes those teams have made this offseason but going off of last year Grand Rapids, Chicago and Rockford were good. Grand Rapids win the Calder Cup the year before. In the old division Toronto was only the really good team.

Funny thing though the Monsters beat Grand Rapids several times, I think GR took them lightly. Also they would have beaten Chicago a few times not for last minute meltdowns. So I do expect them to be competitive at least.

Good competition will make our players better. So would a new coach in LEM.

Not much of a fan for these changes. The overtime one just seems strange to me and essentially results in a rule that varies by game... you never know how long the prescribed 4-on-4 and 3-on-3 times will be. I imagine the confused faces when trying to explain this to the average fan, hah. Plus, I always loved that the AHL went the five shooter route in the shootout.

With the fights, it's actually just one time per game that a player can drop 'em. Looks like the second time will result in the game misconduct. Seems a little much to me... I think guys should get a Round 2 if they want it. Now beyond that, I wouldn't oppose the automatic game misconduct.

It'll be interesting to see the effects these changes have on the number of shootouts played and penalty minutes earned. Gotta believe there will be a sizable drop in both.

Lerg went to San Jose so the Monsters will have to find a new captain. I guess the new guy Street is a candidate but in general I prefer longevity with the team over experience.

I could see Agozzino getting the C.

I would say Lake Erie's team is pretty set:

Hishon, Street, Heard, Carey, Bourke, Smith, Rendulic, Everberg, Henley, Sgarbossa, Meurs, Cheek, Agozzino and potentially Cliche. Schumacher could very easily be back too.

On defense:

Siemens, Stollery, Gervais, Corbett, Beaupre, Lauridsen, and potentially one or two of Elliott, Noreau, Wilson, and Guenin.

Then the 3 goalies to battle it out.

If they do get a few of those NHL/AHL tweeners, they could have a decent team down there.

Saw Pufahl say on social media he'll be back for training camp so I wonder if that means he got a AHL contract. So yeah I'd expect a few of those such as Schumacher. I'm excited for the team this year, should have a lot more talent at least.

Could you elaborate for those who know little and understand even less?

Does this mean the Cutthroats are no longer a feeder for the Avs?

Correct, at least in the practical manner. Ft Wayne will take the place of the Cutthroats. Makes sense for Lake Erie as Ft Wayne is just a bit closer to Cleveland than Denver.

Also ECHL > CHL so there should be improved competition for the players that do get sent there.
