In guessing they are just negotiating. Its no worries… he's an RFA, isn't eligible for arbitration, so his only option is to hold out, which would be stupid. Basically as long as it gets done ebfoe camp, its all good.

Poile has stated he isn't in a big rush, not to take this as a negative though. We have plenty of time to sign him. Im thinking Poile is working on a decently long deal at a smaller value, kind of like the Josi contract. I think Ellis will be here for awhile, he is perfect in our bottom pairing/2nd PP unit defensemen.

Im guessing 3 - 4 year deal at 2.1 mil with his salary increasing every year to the 2.1 or so

Hopefully it ends up being a contract that other teams can deal with when we use him as part of a trade package for a top 6.

No, it's because he stated "Yeah but you need six of them."

We really only have 4 (Neal, Ribs, Smith, and Fisher) and one of them is injured.

This. He's an RFA. My guess is that they were happy with last years progression and are wanting a longer term deal (say five years or so). If they can't come to a conclusion before camp, he has another couple years of RFA, so he'll sign a 1-2 year deal and try again.

Honestly, let's revisit this in November after Lavi has had time to work on Jarnkrok, Wilson and Forsberg.

Exactly. Besides, we don't really need to turn a discussion of Ryan Ellis and his contract negotiation into a debate on how many top six forwards we need.

I second this lol.

So if Ellis were to get a 5 year deal what kind of $ would he be looking at?

Im not saying it won't happen, but I don't think Ellis has been convincing enough to warrant a 5 year deal. That puts almost all the risk on us, as it only buys one year of UFA status.

If Poile is sure he's the real deal and Ellis wants long term, I would think something like 7x2.5 would be appropriate

but I think he's still got a lot to prove, and I don't see Poile giving him more than two years unless its really cheap. Ekholm just signed at 2 x 1.03. I just don't see Ellis commanding much more than that. I expect 2 years at 1.25

I wouldn't mind seeing Ellis at 3 years at 1.8 million per. Then we still have him rfa after contract. Then ekholm and him don't both come up for new deals the same offseason.

Speaking of ekholm, his new two year deal doesn't run him to ufa status correct?

That would be excellent, I think Ellis only improves. This would be the best case scenario

He's ok. Not wild about how undersized he is. He plays with a lot of heart, but I see the league trending bigger and faster..a contract with him longer than 3 years is probably asking for trouble in my opinion.

I wouldn't mind giving Ellis the Josi special at all. He is looking like he has improved enough to play on the second pairing for next season.

Agreed to an extent, but the market is completely different now. We're seeing guys like Brassard get $5m per. Subban just got more than Weber over 8 years, and there is no way he is better than Weber. The most recent CBA is making cap hits seem more inflated than they are.

4 years at 12 million total. Make it so!
