Bryzgalov is better than a few backups, but there aren't many teams that are going to sign Bryzgalov right now and send down a goaltender on a one way deal. As much as we like to think NHL owners have bottomless pockets, most of them would frown upon spending 600K+ on an AHL goalie.

Imagine that you're still paying off a car that you only occasionally use. Would you go out of your way to buy a replacement and then have to make payments on two cars which wouldn't get regular use?

Then mix in the fact that some teams simply may have red flagged Bryzgalov based on past incidents and just aren't interested.

$1.6 million mustn't seem like that much when you and your family were expecting to get $6m in 14-15.

He burned too many bridges with players and management here in Phoenix. I don't see us bringing him back.

A FLAKE
Too easy to get to him
A back up that's a cancer
...and to have to hear how the 'Wings swept the Coyotes because Brzgalov quit!
Very unprofessional

It's been reported that Burke requested that they sign Dubnyk over all other back-ups

I'm telling you right now a lot of teams are going to regret not signing him.

This is more or less a repeat of last season. I don't know how many teams were really kicking themselves for not picking him up then.

Virtually every team has two goalies signed to one way contracts, some teams have three. There's just not a lot of motivation to pick up Bryzgalov right now. Bryzgalov is better/more proven than many backups, but in a lot of cases those guys are behind #1 goalies who are expected to get 60+ starts.

It's going to take an injury (ie, Minnesota last year) or ineffectiveness (ie, Edmonton last year) for there to be a market for Bryzgalov or any of the other goalies who are still unsigned.

Right now, it might be a similar scenario to last year where Bryzgalov has to wait until somebody's starter gets hurt or a backup is just awful.

Pretty much every spot is spoken for right now. Winnipeg is about the only spot I'm not sure about. Hutchinson has a two way deal this year and a one way deal next year. And then there are a few teams with #3 goalies who have one way deals that might get dealt.

Maybe he gets played behind Bob in Columbus?
I think Marty makes up his mind and then things start getting shuffled with tenders.

The Jackets seem to like McElhinney as Bob's backup.

Wasn't a big fan of McBackup when he was on the Ducks.

He isn't great, but he's a cheap option who is only expected to play 10-15 games

Again, the argument isn't so much as whether Bryzgalov is better that McElhinney as it is that McElhinney already has a contract. Columbus doesn't really have a ton of motivation to bring in somebody else and then have a goalie making 650K in the AHL.

Just to break out the car analogy again. Imagine that you have a nice luxury sedan and a truck that you use sparingly. Assuming that you were still making payments on the truck, would you go out of your way to buy a slightly better truck when you only need it once every other week? Or would you save that money for something else?

Bryzgalov is a poor goaltender and an idiot to boot. There are probably 10 guys without NHL jobs that could fill the role that he provide and be better team guys as well.

I'd be very surprised to see him play in this league again.
