Draft Question

Can a player skip the draft and than go to a teams training camp to try and make the team?

Reason being...damn you Crosby for not doing this!!!

I don't think this scenario is possible.

Dang, that's exactly what I would have done if I were ever good enough to play in the NHL.

I didn't look it up again, but I'm pretty sure you have to pass through the draft 2 or 3 times (or until you're 21 years of age... something like that) before you can become an undrafted free agent. At that point you can then be invited to training camps and sign tryout contracts.

The point is, you have to pass through the draft.

Lets just say it's not the best idea.

we signed Olivier Michaud at 18 years old. He came to training camp after being ignored at the draft and he impressed the organizatino so much that they signed him.

so, you have to opt-in but if you're ignored, you can be signed by whoever wants you. It would be stupid if a player could opt out of the draft and sign wherever he wants. many players would have already done it.
