Jets news - September 18th

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Pushing the envelope. Ed asks whether thinking playoffs is too unrealistic with all the questions the Jets have this season.

Winnipeg Sun: Time to put Jets’ coach Paul Maurice’s shape-up challenge to the test. We have heard a lot this summer about the Paul Maurice way and we are soon going to see it in action. Starting with a difficult training camp, you can expect the new bench boss to push this team hard as he puts his brand on the team.

Winnipeg Sun: Five position battles we expect to see in Jets training camp. Ken gets you ready for training camp which kicks off today with this piece on five battles to watch including: 1) Who is the ninth forward? 2)Who is on the second defence pair? 3) 3) What about the backup plan? 4) 4) Who is the other fourth-line winger? and 5) Who is the seventh D-man?

Spector’s Hockey: 30 Players worth watching. Not really a surprise who is on this list for the Jets. Expect all eyes on him this season.

TSN 1290 Winnipeg: Rona Roundtable (audio). Rick was joined by former NHLer JP Vigier to talk about the Jets off-season workouts & training camp.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets captain Ladd ‘accidentally’ favourites tweet by fan critical of GM Cheveldayoff. Thankfully Tim turned a non-story into something because you know it is August when this constitutes news.

TSN: Pavelec, growth of young core key to Jets’ success. Dennis with some thoughts and plenty of questions as we start to get ready for the 2014/15 Jets season.

Winnipeg Sun: Winnipeg Jets chat with Ken Wiebe. Ken takes any and all questions you might have about the team starting at 1 pm.

Team 1040 Radio: Evander Kane with Paterson And Walters (audio). Spoke about his off season so far, getting his training started on time, has he followed the moves made by the team, first camp under coach Maurice, are his comments because of his desire for the team to have success, does he like being in a hockey market, how much longer is he in BC before heading to Winnipeg?

Hockey Hall of Fame: Winnipeg Jets Day at the Hall. The first 1000 fans in Toronto today will receive an Ondrej Pavelec jersey card. As I don’t collect hockey cards I have no idea if these are usually valuable or not.

Winnipeg Sun: Centre Mark Scheifele feeling stronger than ever before. Jets fans will be excited to see the stronger Scheifele on the ice this season.

Jets news:

The Score: Kane responds to Wheeler’s comments about leadership. Is this another controversy in the making? Not sure my baboon heart can take this type of drama before the season even begins. What do you think about the comments and response?

Winnipeg Free Press: Their time to shine. Fans are about to get their first taste of Winnipeg Jets hockey after a long, long summer. Sure they will be the young guns but in this market that is enough to get people excited.

Winnipeg Sun: Slater trying to put dark days of injuries in the past. This will be a big test for a number of players to see if they can stay healthy and contribute to the team.

Winnipeg Free Press: Pavelec running out of elbow room. Like it or not all eyes are on the goalie this season.

Global News: Jets slowly landing back in Winnipeg. Most of the roster is back and skating at the IcePlex as they get ready for the anticipated tough training camp under coach Maurice.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Can he make the jump? Kichton put in a marathon season in the AHL last year and it remains to be seen if he can make the jump in 2014-15 or if he will require a bit more AHL seasoning.

Winnipeg Free Press: Wheeler says Kane unfairly picked on once again over lighthearted tweet. Not really sure who was picking on Evander Kane for his now deleted tweet. I didn’t have a problem with it. I didn’t even really notice the media in this city pick it up and react with any significant umbrage (there were no local stories on the tweet yesterday until after it was discussed at the skate). Regardless, I think its a good lesson in why you can’t take social media too seriously. As a fan you have to decide what you would prefer. An athlete that is a robot who says the same old generic crap or one who actually shares his thoughts. In this case neither Wheeler’s comment nor Kane’s tweet merited any special attention.

Winnipeg Sun: Wheeler is a leader and wants Kane to join him. The fact of the matter is this team could stand to have a room full of leaders and based on the level of competition they are set to face this season, all will be forced to step up big this year.

TSN 1290 Winnipeg: Hustler and Lawless (audio). Senior NHL writer for ESPN Craig Custance joined the guys to chat about the Wheeler interview that caused all the hullabaloo.

Jets official site: On the Radar (video). Mitch caught up with goalie Connor Hellebuyck in this feature focusing on prospects that were here during rookie camp.

Note: Reminder that tomorrow’s Illegal Curve Hockey Show on TSN 1290 Winnipeg goes from 10 am until noon. Get all the latest NHL and Winnipeg Jets hockey talk. Guest: Paul Edmonds (TSN 1290 Winnipeg).

Note II: The Jets Young Stars face the Flames Young Stars tonight at 6 pm in Penticton, B.C. in Game 1 of the Tournament. The play-by-play can be heard on TSN 1290 Winnipeg. You can also watch it via Winnipeg Jets.com or the Flames YouTube channel.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Might be time for Jets to incorporate some teenage talent. While the idea of adding some flash to the lineup might be intriguing it is probably best to allow these young guys like Ehlers the opportunity to continue to develop in Junior instead of rushing them to the NHL.

Winnipeg Free Press: Young Jets excited for tourney. There is a lot of excitement in Jets nation as fans get a chance to follow the young prospects as they take on the Flames prospects in British Columbia today.

Winnipeg Sun: Defensive minded Petan. Defence is not the first word that comes to mind when you are thinking of the offensively gifted BC native but a well rounded game will likely endear him to his coaches as he advances in his hockey career.

Winnipeg Sun: Living the dream. Having a number of prospects going all the way to the Finals of the AHL playoffs last season should serve this team very well in the future.

CBC: Ehlers wants to crack Winnipeg Jets roster ASAP. Lots of young guns champing at the bit for a chance to compete for an NHL roster spot with the Jets. Will they likely stay in Junior or the AHL instead? Perhaps but it is good for the organization to have these prospects pushing the players above them.

Illegal Curve: IceCaps coach Keith McCambridge spoke to the media before leaving for BC (audio). What is his goal for a tournament like this? Has the quality of players gone up in the tournament? Value of getting players into game situations. What does he need to see from the prospects? Does he go in looking to elevate certain players? Are there players who help themselves with this tournament? What does he think of Josh Morrisey’s chances to make the jump to the NHL? July rookie camp lines continuing at this tournament? What he’s seen out of Nic Petan. Where does he see Adam Lowry’s progression? Does he see Lowry as a centre? Thoughts on Ehlers.

Illegal Curve: Jets season tickets packages. If you’d like to see what season ticket holders received in the mail here are the pictures.

Note II: The Jets Young Stars fell to the Flames Young Stars yesterday 6-4. Lots of positive reviews on Jets 2014 1st round (9th overall) pick Nikolaj Ehlers who finished with a goal. 2013 3rd round (84th overall) selection Jimmy Lodge had a goal and an assist in the loss. The Flames have a recap and video of the game in case you would like to get caught up. Next on the schedule are the Vancouver Canucks Young Stars on Sunday at 4 pm.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Baby Jets done in by ‘D’. Probably fair not to get too worried over one game.

Winnipeg Free Press: Don’t dismiss D-man Nogier. The Jets may have gotten lucky with this late pick after he fell in the draft due to his shoulder injury.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets prospects blow lead to lose 6-4 to Flames. Despite a good start the young guns blew a two goal lead in Game 1 of the Tournament.

Calgary Sun: Josh Morrissey hoping to land spot. The Calgary native certainly had an impressive 2013-14 campaign and is looking to bring that success into the upcoming NHL season.

Note: Game 2 of the Young Stars for the Jets as they take on the Canucks Young Stars today at 4 pm. The play-by-play can be heard on TSN 1290 Winnipeg. You can also watch it via Winnipeg Jets.com.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Like a Rock. A little defiance by the Jets GM on his chosen course of action.

Winnipeg Free Press: Quiet centre makes some noise. Lodge got noticed after Game 1 of the tournament.

Winnipeg Free Press: Top pick Ehlers iffy for today’s game vs. Canucks. Sounds like the Jets aren’t going to take any chances with their top selection this year.

The Score: Three storylines to follow this season. They see the three biggest stories as Kane, Pavelec and a tough central division.

The Score: Offseason roundup. A look at the moves (or lack thereof) made by the organization during the summer. Also gives a season outlook projection.

NESN: Jacob Trouba, Mark Scheifele provide optimism. Standard preview with a look at additions/subtractions, players to watch, biggest strengths, glaring weaknesses and expectations.

Jets official site: Interview with GM Kevin Cheveldayoff (video). Missed this yesterday but during the 1st intermission of Game 1 of the Young Stars tournament between the Jets and Flames prospects, Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff spoke with Brian Munz of TSN 1290 Winnipeg about the tournament and the young players in his organization.

Illegal Curve Hockey Show:

Note: Game 3 of the Young Stars for the Jets as they take on the Oilers Young Stars today at 1:30 pm. The play-by-play can be heard on TSN 1290 Winnipeg. You can also watch it via Winnipeg Jets.com.

Jets news:

Illegal Curve: Fan Fest. Jets announce that they will be having a fan fest this Saturday at the IcePlex from 9 am until 2 pm.

Winnipeg Free Press: Maurice will push players to maximum. This should be a very interesting training camp to say the least. Expectations are high from this coach and it seems like the players have bought in.

Winnipeg Free Press: Taking no chances with Ehlers. No point in risking further injury.

Winnipeg Free Press: Petan leads young Jets to OT win over Canucks. They blew the lead but held on for their first win of the Tournament. Final game is this afternoon against the Oilers prospects.

Winnipeg Sun: Hockey a family affair for Jets prospect Comrie. Having a couple of older brothers with NHL experience firing shots at you probably helps with your development as a goalie.

TSN: Cheveldayoff knows playoff appearance is next step for Jets. In conversation with hockey insider Bob McKenzie the Jets GM discussed expectations for his club.

TSN: Jets season preview. It was the Jets turn to have their team evaluated and there was quite a bit in this one including; a look back at last season, Scott Cullen’s analytics, key additions/subtractions, this is now, Sara Orlesky’s five key storylines, depth chart, Craig Button’s A & B Top 5 prospect list and a fantasy player to watch.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: This Ehlers kid can play a bit. Plenty of buzz from around the hockey world, not just in Winnipeg, about the talent this prospect has been displaying at the Young Stars tournament.

Winnipeg Free Press: Players getting cranked for camp. Sounds like they are ready to break up the monotony of summer and get ready for camp. Of course you wanna be careful what you wish for considering this first camp under coach Maurice is gonna be anything but pleasurable.

Winnipeg Free Press: Club high on Hutchinson. The young goalie had a chip on his shoulder which likely really helped focus his game and got him to his current spot.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets prospects prevail 5-4 in a shootout over Oilers. Two wins (one shootout, one OT) and a loss to the Flames prospects was a pretty good showing by the Jets young guns.

Winnipeg Sun: Ehlers puts on an impressive show for Winnipeg Jets in Young Stars Tournament. A modified hat trick (third goal was in shootout) was a nice way for Nikolaj Ehlers to end the tournament with his fellow Jets prospects.

Winnipeg Sun: Hutchinson still has lots to prove despite rapid rise in Jets ranks. His NHL resume is still pretty bare but expect the hard working Hutchinson to be fully willing to do whatever it takes to get his opportunities next season.

Winnipeg Sun: Trouba wants to take on bigger role with Winnipeg Jets this season. He shows a maturity beyond his years and you can expect the Jets to continue to give him more and more responsibility this upcoming season.

Yahoo Sports: Nikolaj Ehlers dazzles at NHL rookie tournament. Plenty of buzz for the Jets prospect after this tournament.

Sportsnet: 2014-15 Jets preview. Missed this one the other day. They are releasing their list in reverse order and they just started which goes to show you their expectations for the Jets. Picked 25th overall by the Sportsnet crew.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Is change brewing in Jetsville? Unless the organization is beyond convinced that a prospect can make the jump I just cannot see them rushing any players into the NHL simply to help for this season.

Winnipeg Free Press: Scratching a seven year itch. The odds are against the club appearing in the playoffs this season but that is why you play the game. You never know what is going to happen.

Winnipeg Free Press: Bench strength. J.P. is back with his whiteboard and this time he is analyzing coach Maurice’s likely impact in his first full season.

Winnipeg Sun: Isn’t it too soon for Ehlers to be a regular? In addition to the question in the headline, Paul writes about the next prospect to make the jump to the Jets, Pavelec’s game, the Kane question, Byfuglien on the wing, more support from the bottom of the lineup and the Maurice factor.

Winnipeg Sun: Hockey writer Ken Wiebe talks Winnipeg Jets training camp from 1-2 p.m. With training camp scheduled to start tomorrow Ken will be taking any and all questions you may have about the upcoming two weeks of Jets camp.

The Hockey Writers: Throwing an Illegal Curve – Winnipeg Jets Q & A. Our own Ezra Ginsburg answered 12 questions about the Jets for Chris Wassel and The Hockey Writers. Give it a read.

TSN: Bob McKenzie interviews Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff (video). The TSN Hockey Insider sat down and chatted with the Jets GM for close to 18 minutes in this video. Began with talk of the competition in the central division, single biggest difference under coach Paul Maurice, confidence in Ondrej Pavelec and need to improve the numbers, has he done anything specific with Pavelec, what does Kane need to do to get back to being a goal scoring winger, what did he think of Blake Wheeler’s comments on Kane, on Buff preferring to be defence over forward (Note: Bob reversed D and F but we know what he meant), commitment to Perreault, centres for foreseeable future, Lowry’s advantage, having young players step in to pro ranks, on Trouba’s dominance, needing to make a bold move and ends with a fill in the blank of how the Jets can make the playoffs.

Illegal Curve: Jets release training camp schedule and roster. While camp starts on Thursday the only sessions open to the public are those that take place at the IcePlex. If you’d like to see who is on Team Blue and who is on Team White we have both groups listed.

Illegal Curve: Jets re-assign six players in advance of training camp. Five of the players will be heading to the IceCaps whereas the sixth is off to the QMJHL.
