Another thing... he says he wants to drop that $39,000,000 payroll to $26,000,000.
Well they'll shed close to $9 mil from their payroll by not re-signing Francis, Boughner and Hill, another $2.75 mil if Wesley isn't brought back. That's close to $12 mil right there. Of course these players will have to be replaced, but they could always go the youth route or sign some cheap UFA. If anything, I think the Canes have to find a taker for Brind'Amour's contract, even if they eat up some salary. Brindy at $5 mil is useless, at say $3 mil, or $2.5 mil, teams will be interested.
i wonder why wesley isnt going anywhere? typical gm smokescreen? he is a 35 year old ufa who could help a playoff team - and the canes are an orginization that needs to get an asset for every player possibly leaving. Even for a 2 or 3 round pick, i think the canes have to do it. francis is the only guy i dont mind seeing leave for nothing.
if they are serious about that much payroll being lopped off, its going to be hard to keep oneill. i agree with peter griffin about brindy, he would have pretty good value at 3 million a year. if the canes eat a couple mill for brindy, and combine him with oneill + maybe even a ufa d....what do you think we would get from jersey? its a lot of salary for lou, but you never know. they need the depth at d, a faceoff guy-and another scoring winger. im being ridiculously large in scope here-but it would ease most of our suffering in one fell swoop.
If I had to guess right now, Rod may be the most likely "big guy" to be moved if the salary arrangement is to JR's liking. I'll hate to see Roddy was my favorite Flyer for years and my moving here and his arrival made the Canes conversion much easier.
If O were going, I think the deal might have been done by now. But I've been wrong before.
