Sad news - Gaetan Duchesne

He was 44.

Several of us saw him play in the Capitals alumni game a little over a week ago. Triggered memories seeing the 'Vas Y Gaetan' sign hanging at the top of the bleachers.

That's a real shame. I met him once and, judging by the many other Caps players I've met over the years, he was one of the most affable and fan friendly players in the team's history. I met Langway at the same function and he was a total jerk. Maybe that explains why I've always felt Langway was overrated. Gaetan was only two years older than me. Scary. We'll miss ya Gaetor

Interesting how one day can make a longterm impression.

I met Langway once at Verizon years ago while standing in a beer line with bunch of friends. I turned around and said "hey you're Rod Langway". He was as nice as could be to me and my buddies, stood around and took some pictures with us and talked with us.

I guess it goes to show you that everyone can have a bad day.

I remember in one of the Caps early playoff victories against the Flyers or Islanders, GD scored the goal that proved to be the game winner. He did not know much English and when they interviewed him after the game in the locker room on TV about how it felt to score, his response was, "I shoot. I score. We win."

1,000 NHL games is very impressive for a guy drafted in the ninth or tenth round or some late round and with limited skills compared to most NHLers. He put out more effort every game that just about any other player, and he prospered and persevered because of it.

Gaetan was at his best checking Mike Bossy in the playoffs - and going on little scoring binges as he was doing it. Who were his old linemates?
