Rangers Sign WHL All-Star Defenseman Michael Busto

http://www.newyorkrangers.com/pressb...es.asp?id=2888

He was an overage player this season but put up some great numbers as a defenseman in the WHL:

70GP - 20G - 43A - 63P (3rd among defenseman)

He was named to the first all-star team. He has good size being 6'1 and 215 pounds.

He was also teammates with Ryan Russell in Juniors for the past few years.

I think this is a pretty good move by the Rangers, have him possible play in the AHL next season if he's good enough and use him as the top offensive defenseman. Bobby S still has another year in juniors, Pock is obviously not around anymore...Sauer isn't really that offensive (though he still will get some points)..so why not give this kid a chance.

Good move by Sather/Maloney.

edit - He's also improved each season

02-03: 50GP - 8P
03-04: 68GP - 17P
04-05: 71GP - 29P
05-06: 69GP - 43P
06-07: 70GP - 63P

+80 total in his WHL career.

Sounds pretty good. I wonder why he wasn't drafted though.

probably because his numbers spike so late in his Junior career. In his draft year he only put up 17 points. The year after that his point total rose to 29. It's really only his his 4th year in the WHL that sees him reach big production (49) points, and then a major spike in his overage year.

The question here is: is this a guy with NHL talent who simply began his development late, or is hea player with limited talent that took advantage of his age and expiriance?

We won't really know until we see him in the AHL. Many of us had concerns that Ryan Callahan's number spike in his overage year was deceiving, but he sure proved that notion to be incorect.

got this from the prospect board

He is an ok player defiantly above average, played for moose jaw, swift current, and kootenay during his time in the WHL. Best regular season year was 63 points(20g,43a) in 70 games with Kootenay this year helping lead them to second place in the tough Central Division, Best playoff year was in 04-05 when he played 16 games collecting 6 points(1g,5a). Pretty good stats for a defenceman playing with Kootenay, a big guy fairly smooth skater and can make a good first pass, can be over aggressive at times, and likes to play the body.

sounds like he's worth taking a shot on. You can never have enough young defensemen.

So the pool from which next year's Hartford D-Corps is:

Sauer, Liffiton, Baranka, Potter, Reese, Busto, and (maybe) Staal

Degon, Puriton, Lampman, Pikkarainen, Richter, Taylor

The first group are players with birthdates of 1984 and later, the second group are older than that. Most of the guys in that first group can be said to have atleast an outside shot of becoming NHLers (I have no idea about Busto and I have my doubts about Liffiton), while the second group are probably career AHLers. The question is: how many spots are given to guys in the second group?

I'd guess that atleast two veterans will be retained, leaving 5 spots open for the younger guys. If Staal makes the big club then only one player gets sent to the ECHL, if not, then two.

So we have... Sanguinetti, Sauer, Liffiton, Baranka, Potter, Reese, Busto, Staal, Rozsival, Mara, Girardi, Pock, Tyutin

That's leaving out Malik & Rachunek. Where we gonna fit all these guys?

Sanguinetti won't even be in Harford until 2008. Malik is probably gone after his contract is up (hopefully sooner.) Sauer, Potter and Reese will all need atleast a year before their ready to contribute, if ever. Baranka still hasn't played an injury free year, who knows if he ever stays healthy long enough to put it together. I don't think Liffiton is fast enough to make it in the NHL. Busto is a wild card.

In short: Not everyones going to make it, and those that do will not be ready all at once. The only guys that are likely to make a run in next years training camp are Staal and maybe Baranka. Everyone else is atleast a year away, if not more. They'll be fazed in.

Do you mean Rachunek?

This is also assumes that we don't move a superfluous defenseman in the off-season.

I think we will, at the draft or during camp next year. We have too many bodies, someone will have to go.

I can see Malik being traded at the next year's deadline. So, that'll free up a spot for 2008-2009 season. Mara would be gone after 2008-2009 season. That'll free up a spot for 2009-2010 season. I'd say that Baranka would replace Malik and Sanginetti will replace Mara.

He didn't rack up too many PIMS, but the guy did have 8 fighting majors in the WHL over his 4 seasons.

Busto fight card

Tommy Maxwell 2X
Chris Di Ubalo
DJ King
Michael Polak
Jason Fransoo
Brett Palin
Derek Dorsett

any gm that would take him would be dumb, but we also thought that about Nedved and Malakhov

and the same can be said about Rafalski and John Madden. Devils do a good job with finding ufa gems as does the Rangers.

There were alot of ufa gems out there

Anyone have a stat with players in the NHL that were never drafted.

Dustin Penner, John Madden, David Clarkson, Jed Ortmeyer, Thomas Pock, Johnny Odyua, Brian Rafalski to name a few.
