Andre Benoit?

Last year at training camp, media were talking he was one of the guys who *could* stay with the team. What I have seen from him in pre season though, he was really bad. Made lots of turnovers and I didnt see much good in him. I didn't really know where he was coming from either...knew nothing about him...just that his play was bad in my perspective.

However, I learned that he is doing pretty good in hamilton. He was even or in the + for 23 straight games for hamilton. He was also named best overager in the OHl last year.

Do you guys think he has a chance at cracking the habs roster next year or in years to come?

i dont think so. career AHLer i think. He could blossom into a puckmoving bottom pairing dman later on, but thats a big if. he is still somewhat young, so well see. We have Gorges now, who is better then him and plays a similar game.

I can't see it next year, anyway. I was a bit hopeful for him back when we first signed him, since I've been a fan of his for many years in the OHL. But it was always contingent on him solidifying his defensive play... which I initially remained hopeful that he would, since I had been thinking of him as a fairly "smart" and "aware" player, who would start to learn to play well in his own zone just as soon as he was told to focus on it and given some instruction (whereas in the OHL, he basically had the green light all the time, so I didn't necessarily hold any defensive lapses against him... especially not in games when he played up front!).

Seeing him the scattered handful of times I have in Hamilton, however... well, I'm not sure that the progress has been as significant as it needed to be. I thought if Mark Giordano, Chris Campoli, and now Daniel Girardi could step in so quickly from their OHL days, then maybe Benoit would have some hopes too. But I'm not really seeing it. Good news is he still has time, and he has played well enough in Hamilton. He still needs to train hard, add strength, get stronger and quicker, and if he does all that this summer, then continues to make at least some progress in terms of positioning and can use that added strength more effectively in Hamilton next year, I suppose we could start to edge him upwards on the depth chart and he might emerge as a guy who could get a look down the road (if we re-sign him). But he can't linger too much longer, because we're soon going to get some more guys into the system too (Carle, maybe the Russians, eventually Fischer, etc)... so he really needs a HUGE summer and great season next year.

I'm assuming we re-sign him, anyway. Maybe like Milroy last year, a one-year kick at the can to show what he can do before the organisational depth overcomes him.

my only guess would have to do with him beign a french canadian...but even then,. I can't say for sure if he is frenc hcanadian...his name looks like it though.

And if it is the case, medias always wanting french canadians on the team hyped him for no real reason.

Is this it?

Who cares where he's from?

Those debates are completely pointless and childish.

I agree, that's why I just linked so everyone could look and we could get on with the actual point of the thread.

I may have over-reacted but the discussion didn't look like it was going anywhere good.
