UnionLeader - Monarchs Insider : A goalie call to make 5/8/'07

Story : With the clock ticking down toward tonight's Game 3 of the Atlantic Division final series between the Monarchs and Providence Bruins, goaltending remains a question mark for Manchester.

Bona fide NHL talent Jason LaBarbera, who was the top goaltender in the AHL in the regular season, has had a week off after backup Barry Brust won Game 2 last Wednesday to even the series at one game apiece. LaBarbera rested a sore right knee.

So who will start for the Monarchs tonight in Providence?

The decision was not made yesterday and Monarchs coach Mark Morris said it was to be discussed during this morning's bus ride to Providence.

Morris said ultimately the starting goaltender decision will be his. The Monarchs' general manager is former NHL goaltender Ron Hextall and the goaltending coach in the Los Angeles Kings organization is another past NHLer, Bill Ranford.

"I've never been told which goalie has to play," said Morris. "I figured it would be best if we assess the situation in the morning and get a better feel for how rested everybody is ... It's encouraging that Barry Brust played well his last outing."

Notes : Providence also hosts Game 4 tomorrow night at 7:05 before the series switches to Manchester for Game 5 Saturday at 7:35 p.m. ... Bruins D Matt Lashoff is expected to return tonight ... Morris on agitator LW Petr Kanko after Game 2: "He was in everybody's face, plays with a lot of energy" ... Depth is aplenty for the Monarchs -- most ever, in fact. In eight playoff games 14 Monarchs have played every game leaving four other positions where eight players have been rotated through ... D Joey Mormina is injured and out for the remainder of the season, but on the sidelines yet to have played are D Eric Werner, winger Kevin Westgarth and winger Paul Crosty. Crosty and Werner are available in emergency situations (where no player on the playoff roster is a healthy scratch). Westgarth, who has been working on completing his Princeton degree, can play at any point.

UnionLeader :Monarchs put their trust in Brust 5/3/'07

Story : "I think we took advantage of our home ice tonight, we didn't last night," said Monarchs coach Mark Morris. "We had great energy and we sustained it for the whole game."

To say the least it was a stunner when the Monarchs played without LaBarbera. He wasn't even on the bench. LaBarbera apparently (however slight) re-injured his right knee Saturday in Worcester when the Monarchs closed out their first-ever first round series in overtime in Game 6. LaBarbera absorbed the Game 1 loss here and there were no signals from the Monarchs that he would not play last night.

"Very near the game we realized it was time," said Morris of resting LaBarbera. Gordon said the Bruins had an idea that LaBarbera would not play. Brust was told earlier yesterday to be ready as it would be 50-50 whether to play the bona fide NHLer LaBarbera or not.

For his part Brust said, "I came ready to play ... (Bruins) didn't have much the first two periods and our boys did a good job in front of me."

Notes : Someone should have been singing "For Boston. For Boston" at the start of last night's game since the Monarchs started an all-Boston College first line of Ryan Murphy-Brian Boyle-Jeff Giuliano and defensemen Brendan Buckley-Peter Harrold. "They requested to start," said Morris. "Brendan Buckley jokingly said how about the BC guys start and I said, 'well Brusty's not a BC guy but he is from B.C. (British Columbia) so that completed the six-pack there" ... Monarchs RW Murphy played for the first time in 45 games. He was out after shoulder surgery ... Healthy Monarchs scratched: D Bryan Schmidt, C Trevor Lewis, D Rich Petiot, RW Paul Crosty, LW Kevin Westgarth, D Eric Werner ... Monarchs injuries: G Jason LaBarbera (right knee), RW Lauri Tukonen (concussion), G Jon Quick (ankle), D Joey Mormina (right leg) ... Bruins injuries: D Mark Stuart, D Nathan Dempsey, D Jonathan Sigalet, RW Petr Kalus ... Healthy Bruins scratched: D Lashoff, D Dwayne Zinger left yesterday since his wife is having their first child, RW Aaron Downey ...

Providence Journal : P-Bruins run out of steam against Monarchs 5/3/'07

Story : “If you had told me,” said Providence coach Scott Gordon, “that we were going to get a split up here, I’d have taken that in a heartbeat. No question about it. I think our guys are leaving here with our heads up. We’re going home under great circumstances.”

The six-day respite should give the battered P-Bruins a chance to lick their wounds, especially on defense, where they were missing four regulars last night.

“Now we can kind of relax,” said assistant captain Nate DiCasmirro, “and heal the bruises. Then regroup and get back at it.”

As it was, the task of winning their fourth playoff game in five nights — all on the road — proved to be a task too daunting.

“We weren’t ready like we were [in Game One],” said defenseman Sean Curry. “The first two periods, we struggled. We weren’t there. We didn’t have our legs under us.”

ICE CHIPS : Providence had hoped for some good news on the injury front when defenseman Matt Lashoff took the pregame skate for the first time since being injured in the April 15 regular-season finale against Manchester. However, Lashoff was unable to play. Coupled with the absence of stalwart defender Dwayne Zinger, who left the team to be with his wife, Erica, for the birth of their first child (a girl), the P-Bruins were forced to play with a rotation of just five blue-liners. Instead, Gordon was forced to dress 13 forwards, putting rookie Chris Collins into uniform for the first time in the playoffs. … Manchester was missing Jason LaBarbera, the team’s All-Star goaltender who made an early exit from Game One. LaBarbera has been hampered by a “lower body injury” (believed to be a gimpy knee), suffered in the final week of the regular season. … Gordon will give his charges two days off before retaking the practice ice on Saturday.

According to the AHL's site, Jon Quick is no longer with the Monarchs. He was released from his ATO yesterday. So it looks like his injury is too serious to play at all this Cup run.

Just as I was going to post the WGIR lost its feed, it came back. Thank goodness, I was hoping I hadn't listened to this whole game just to miss the end.

Defense producing the shots; defense producing the goal. Monarchs need to work on everything related to offense.
