Mikael Samuelsson

Would the Wings consider trading Samuelsson in the offseason and if so what kind of return would they expect for him? A draft pick or current roster player or a prospect?

How about a bag of pucks and a bottle of Swedish vodka?

Without Sammy the wings (probably) wouldn't have won game 2.

As much as we enjoy throwing the occasional barb at Sammy, the guy costs $1.2 MM, plays on any line Babs deigns to put him on, gets some PP time, and managed to garner 14 G and 20 helpers last season. He's pretty darn cheap for an all around utility kind of guy.

Almost the exact words I was going to use. Also, he's big enough to give and take some punishment.

Also he isn't as mistake prone as Lang and Williams. I think it was pretty much either Sammy or Williams who had to go because they were pretty much played in the same role. Sammy is the better all around player, Williams is better offensively, but Williams would never even try defensive play. I am not a huge fan of Sammy, but he has played well in the playoffs and is a good utility type of player.

Fugu hit the nail on the head

2 goals to win the series. Flukes or the product of a good game?

Both I say. He has played solid defensivly and was due for some goals. Right man at the right spot. He has a laser shot and it was nice to see him bury a few behind Nabby.

Didn't Sammy play for Sharks a few years back?

Yap, was drafted by them. They said it various times during the game. "Sharks product sinks Sharks" is basically what they were going for all night as a headline

Sammy had a five point game on the last night of the regular season. He's got talent, there's no doubt about it.

One problem, he is streaky. You canít rely on him for a long period of time

Sure, but he is paid like a 3rd liner basically. 1.2m is not all the world. No 4th line money, granted, but pretty cheap anyway. And what do you want from a 3rd liner? First and foremost defensive stability, hustle, team spirit. You get THAT from Sammy on a regular basis. 20 goals and winning the occasional game here and there is a bonus which is not even really paid for!

I think, his contract makes him a good player for the team. At least!

I gotta say I was wrong. I was screaming for Sammy and Lang to be traded during the year. Sammy has stepped it up in the Playoffs. Lang is still so-so in my mind. For every good play he's made, he's made a bad one as well.

I'm glad I'm not the Wings coach

Well some of us did back off screaming for Sammy's head when you factor in their salaries. Sammy gets a piddly $1.2MM, which is hardly in the top echelon. Lang was the 2nd highest forward salary on the team after Dats (3rd after you factor in Bertuzzi's annualized amount). So you do expect a bit more from him. Certainly he was getting more IT than the other forwards too, so.... I think Sammy was being put in a lot of different situations so maybe it took him time to find his groove. Like others mentioned too though-- he's definitely streaky. At his pay level, he can be. At Lang's salary? Nope.

What's that old saying? Trade a guy or let him go, and guess who's most likely to come back and hurt you. He may not score on anyone else all year, but the former team will get it.

And even if it's disproving by statistical facts, that saying remains true since it's much more noticeable (and funny for commentators and other media to point out).

It's more fun to say "oi, that dude that just smoked you, didn't you trade him some time ago?" than "that dude that just tanked awfully for us, didn't you trade him some time ago?".
