I believe he's the type of d-man who's only gonna get better with age. It would take him to 38 years-old which is not that bad for elite defencemen. He's not a natural leader, but other guys can still learn just by watching him play sound positional hockey and closing gaps between him and opposing forwards.

I want to see him stay for as long as possible and while I was stunned by the Dipietro signing last summer, I'm starting to think, contracts like those might not be such bad ideas in some cases.
10 years would be just plain irresponsible. We have no idea what future CBA's will look like and like somebody else said, what happens if Markov gets injured or his back injury from 2006 flares up and becomes chronic?

I agree. I always laugh when people want to sign him to 10 years... So, on the last year of his 10 year contract, we would be paying Markov 4.5+, when he is 38 years old... There are VERY few 38 year olds who get that kind of money and I would be willing to bet that Markovs won't be one of them. His game will regress as he gets older and a 10 year contract would be an example of irresponsible management. I would say that the max contract that should be considered is around 5 years (MAYBE 6 if is a rediculously good deal)...

Mainly his agent his back from Russia. Says he'll start negociating Markov's contract this week.

It also mentions that Souray didn't hear a word from Habs management yet.

Sign him for 3 or 4 years at about $3.5 - 4 million a year. He is worth that to the team and if he is willing to stay in Montreal, then do everything you can to keep him here for a while. We need him on our blueline.

Souray can walk. He can go find a team that is stupid enough to pay him the $5-$6 million he will be demanding and let them deal with his defensive mistakes. He is not worth anymore than $3 million a year because of his terrible defensive play. He is great on the powerplay where he has the time to get that huge shot off....but put him on the ice 5 on 5 and watch him struggle and make mistakes defensively.

IMO...that is one thing we have to start improving on....our defence.
