Longshot Rumor: Pittsburgh interested in Montoya?

My high school hockey coach recently told me that he had a close friend who works for the penguins and there entire system. He told my coach that the rangers have been shopping montoya around like crazy and that theyre not entirely sure that fleury is going to be there goalie of the future. He didnt tell me much more than that, but if the rangers traded Montoya to the penguins, what do you think a deal would look like?

Doesn't sound very substantive at all and the Rangers are not getting very much for Montoya at all until he comes up and shows promise at the NHL Level, end of story.

Pittsburgh won't trade for Montoya, and even if they did, I don't know what we would get, cause you know we can't get Crosby, Malkin or Staal, and there isn't many other players I would want for Montoya

give me a break. have you have heard of common sense? this is about the stupidest rumor i've ever heard. the pens are one of the least likely teams to be interested in montoya. unless fleury suffered a career ending injury that no one knows about there is a less than ZERO % chance of this even being discussed.

i think someone is lying to you and making crap up to seem important

If Pittsburgh is going to make any changes for next year it would be to improve their team defense. They have enough offense to compete with anyone, and Fleury, while maybe not currently at the very top of the goalie list, is certainly better than average at worst. With a better D in front of him he should be able to improve his stats. I don't see the team even considering moving him until they see how good he can be while backstopping a better defense. Remember, he's still only 22 and entering his 3rd full season. You don't give up on #1 overall picks that easily.

unless your the team that traded luongo (the 1st time)

why the hell would the rangers trade a possible franchise goaltender to a division rival ..? especially one that would give nothing off they're roster worth caring about in return..

Luongo wasn't a 1st overall pick the 1st time.

This rumor makes no sense anyway. Fleury, although I feel he's overrated, just won 40 games this year. They're not giving up on him after numbers like that.

Won't happen

Pens will stick it out with Fleury. Heck the kid won 40 games last season. We can sign Thibault to take the backup role. Or not resign Thibault and allow Nolan Schaefer to play behind Fleury. Either way our goaltending seems stable enough.

Regardless of the validity of this rumor, my feeling is that Montoya WILL get dealt this off-season, probably by draft day.

That would probably not come as a surprise to most of us...whether we agree with it is a different matter entirely.

Pens goalie depth :
1- Fleury
2- Thibault
3- Schaefer
4- Goepfert (Hoby Baker type of season this year)
5- Brown (HB nominee this year)

Montoya is of ZERO need.
Now, if Marc Staal or Tuytin were available, I'd say the Penguins would be interested, but we all know that won't happen.

i agree completely...but its not gonna be to pittsburgh. i'm not doubting the possibility of montoya getting moved, i'm doubting the stupidity involved in a 'rumor' that has the penguins giving up a top young player for montoya and then unloading fleury. so they basically breakeven in net more or less and then lose that top young player for no reason.

While I'm not sold on Fleury, the rumor suggested smacks too much of Millbury. Basically there are five places I can see Montoya moved - either FLA (for Horton or Jokinen), TB (if that Richards rumor has ANY validity), or to CHI, PHX or EDM for a top pick in the upcoming draft IF the right player is available.

Horton would be a stud in New York, but I don't know if he's worth Montoya.
