I've read it, and while I don't agree with all of it, there are some good points, the best of course being: "Itís time to Dump Bettman. Dump high salaries and high-ticket prices, and return the game to its 1990 configuration. The game was fine until Gary Bettman broke it."

Couldn't have said it better myself...

^ Exactly. Change all the rules and line configurations back to how they where before Bettman took over, and the game will be great again.

To their credit, they are rolling back some rules. But at the same time, they're also adding some really frickin' bad ones.

If you believe this, you really have your head in the clouds. Did Bettman tell the Av's, Rangers, Flyers, Leafs, Stars & Blues to go out and spend $60-70M on salary?

Bettman did expand the league. He did this to try and get a better TV contract, which was the sports only chance to support the current salary levels. The TV contract hasn't (and won't) materialize, so it really has put the squeeze on the small market teams.

I'm not a Bettman fan by any stretch of the imagination, but the biggest issue with the game today is the salary level, which is controlled by the owners.

From an off-ice standpoint, you're right. But as far as rule changes go, Bettman's done more harm than good, to the point where the GMs are rolling back rules Bettman encouraged.

My sentiments exactly. He's an easy whipping boy for issues much larger than the commisioner's position.

The idea of rolling back of ticket prices is pure fantasy. You can turn rules back. You can turn back the clock on economies.

***

And "save the NHL" is a bit melodramtic. No, it's a lot melodramatic.

Call it what you will. But a business that loses over a quarter billion dollars in a single year, is, through bad management and poor product developement, chasing away its regular customers, and is, furthermore, in danger of forfieting control of capital outlay, a business seriously considering closing 100 million dollar franchises and is also on the verge of seeing it's main sources of access to customers evaporate, quite frankly, is in need of saving...

I love hearing, "Bettman's done this, Bettman's done that, etc"

For any rule change to be made, it must be approved by the Board Of Governors (owners). Gary Bettman doesn't make changes on his own. Anything people think Gary Bettman has done to this game, is in fact what the owners have approved.
