Grade Me

Ok Caps Fans, after completing the Offseason game over in the trade rumors forum, i want you guys to grade me. now i didnt get all that I wanted cause a bunch of the free agents wanted to go to higher contender teams.

Trades
Donald Brashear and Ben Clymer for Sergei Samsonov and Francis Bouillon
1st rounder, 4th rounder, and Brian Pothier for Kim Johnsson and Mark Parrish
(Now i know you probably wouldn't been trading your 5th overall pick, especially in that trade, but I needed a top d-man, and its a fantasy thing)

Signings
Anson Carter 2 years 1.3 million
Viktor Kozlov 2 years 2.7 million
Darryl Sydor 2 years 5 million
Michael Nylander 4 years 22 million

So howd I do?

Pretty poor, I'd say.

Besides Nylander (and even then I would never give him a four-year deal at $5M+), I don't like any of the additions at all.

The Caps should stay far, far away from Carter and Samsonov.

for an islanders fan trying to shanghai the caps, you did great!

don't want samsonov. wouldn't mind carter or nylander, but not the latter at that price.

If those were the moves GMGM made this summer, you'd have a full on revolt on your hands. The teams biggest needs weren't met, and you took on way too much salary for the owner to be happy.

Sometimes the moves you don't make are as important as the ones you do. I think that's the case here where you have additions that, for the most part, don't really fit.

1. The Caps would not trade Brashear. They have no interest in that.
2. Carter wouldn't take that contract.
3. Caps wouldn't risk 4 years on Nylander.

Since Carter and Nylander are former Caps why not Zubrus and Bondra too?

Its all fantasy with no relation to reality. Caps are not going to add 6 new veteran players. They don't need that. They have shown no interest in that kind of roster shake up. They won't spend that kind of payroll.

Reality is the Cap might add 4 new players to the next roster including Backstrom.

Pretty awful.

I'll go with F. While I am sure the FA didn't want to sign here there no point in just throwing money away. This is a classic case of spending just to spend and likely not having enough understanding of the team's needs.

Samsonov's a headache and we dont need his albatross of a contract.
We don't need another 6th d in Boullion
Brashear won't get traded due to his strong physcial prescence.
KJ pretty good but I would hope for the 5th you could have brought back something more.
Parrish is okay.
Nylander is decent but possibly an overpayment
Kozlov is uneeded since Backstrom is centering the second line.
Why do you need Carter if you already traded for Parrish and Samsonov? The team already has wingers in Ovy, Semin, Clark, Pettinger

Nylander is a solid player who had two very solid years, yet he is aging and played those years joined at the hip with Jagr, a player who posted 123 and 96 points in that span.

When the season starts in the first week of October, Nylander will be 35 years old. Yet you gave him four years and $5.5 million per season.

That's completely inexcusable. The answer is sometimes not to play.
