6 years for both of them? Insane.

Flyers trade the Preds 1st round pick back to NAS for the exclusive rights to negotiate.

Oh well, I didn't want either of them anyway.

why? I see no problems with the wings.

hopefully this means a certain name won't be popping up in every thread anymore.

Woah, Philly with the pre-emptive strike. Timmonen and Hartnell were going to be highly sought after players come July 1st.

1st thought: great situation for the flyers to put themselves in by have exclusive rights

2nd: poor predators. they wouldn't have kept these 2 anyway but as someone said on the preds board this is basically an extension of the forsberg trade. they gave up a hell of a lot for someone whose full impact wasn't close to (and maybe never will be in the future) being felt.

3rd thought: as SBOB just said, the years and the salaries for both are insane. definitely north of what anybody thought.

Good for us . The only problem is lets hope 6 year contracts don't become standard for FA. Espescially older ones.

Wow, Timmo is a very good Defenseman but 6 mill + a year???? It's gonna be interesting to see the fallout effect this will have on the other UFA's.

What effect will the Hartnell contract have on the Nylander contract?

It might seem like overpayment now but I'm sure the Flyers got them to sign for less than what they would have earned had they tested the free agent market. Maybe it turns out to be a great deal, maybe not, we'll have to wait and see. The Flyers knew they needed a top-pair defenseman and help on left wing after Gagne. So they made this deal. I actually think Hartnell could be getting a bit too much, even if you count his intangibles that don't show up on the stat sheet. But it still looks like a pretty good move right now. The Atlantic is going to be even tougher this year with an improved Philly. It's going to be awesome.

good point. but when you trade a draft pick for the rights to a player, you HAVE to get them signed.

I'm a bit disappointed, because the Flyers keep signing some of my favourite Finns. Then again, when I saw that they were taking a $7 mil cap hit on Timonen alone, I was glad. I thought he'd fit very well on the Rangers alongside a guy like Tyutin or Rosie, but at that price, no worries. He could afford to buy all of Kuopio with that salary.

For the Preds, I'd say this is less an extension of the Forsberg trade than damage control from what turned out to be a mistake. They were going to lose Timonen and Hartnell anyway, so why not get something back that, in hindsight, they would have been better off not trading anyway?

I'm sure they had the numbers worked about before the trade.

What seems a little sketchy to me is presumably the Flyers had knowledge that if they acquired Hartnell and Kimmonen the two would sign with them.

Did they negotiate before the trade was completed? If so, wouldn't that be against the rules?

They could have been given the go-ahead to negotiate from Nashville which might be why they had to part with a 1st round pick and all for the exclusive rights to negotiate.

We don't know and might never know, but if they were tampering, you'd have seen Nashville say something about that I would think.

Cap implications and overpayment aside, I hate to see these two players in our divison now.

I don't think you can really fault Nashville here, they were losing both these guys anyway. Why not get something for it. 6.3 cap hit for timmo is alot, i think Philly could have gotten him with that type of offer even during the UFA process. Who knows though.

bingo. Nashville wanted to get the deal done, and had no reason not to allow Philly to talk to them.

If Hartnell gets 4.2 per year, Nylander should get 6.5 or 7 mil. I guessing Sather will try to sign him to 6.0 with incentives if u reach 50 assist or 80 pts.

The Predators had to get the pick in return for two reasons:

1) If they didn't the fans would go crazy.

2) If they didn't there is no way that the Flyers could have signed them as they did not own their rights.

That said, either:

1) The Flyers had knowledge that they could sign these two.

2) The Flyers didn't and gambled by trading for them before knowing their salary demands. Presumably the Flyers were willing to pay them what they wanted and even further compensate them for foregoing unrestricteed free agency.

My question still remains: under scenario 1 did they get that knowledge before or after the trade was made? Did they negotiate a contract before they sent the pick to the Preds or did they role the dice, send the pick to the Preds and then start negotiating the contracts.

I guess the question then is did they make that option available to all teams?
