The cap is 50.3 million, not 53.

According to a poster yesterday, HOH said JJ is making Chia count the Lewis and Hab contracts count against the cap as well so there is even less money.

Since the B's are tight against the cap right now, why not trim the payroll a bit in order to make room for the younger guys coming up.

Here's my suggestion...

Dump Salary

Chistov - $800 000
Mowers - $475 000
=savings of $1.275M

Trim Payroll Through Trades

Ward - $2.75M = He's a UFA after this season.
Murray - $4.15M = Only if the B's can get a cheaper sniper in return.

these are only suggestions, but the B's have to free up some money somehow!!!

Switch Lashoff for Ward and save $2 million.

Shanny is most likely headed make to the rangers and I wouldn't touch Jeff O'Neill with a 90 foot pole, I mean do we really need a guy who was healthy scratch for the Leafs at times last year?

Not going to sign anyone just let roll and hope we get that #1 pick and new Gm that can make good trades and judge the cap

I would assume Chia is going to re-sign Wideman or that trade would make him look even worse.

according to the source over at NHLSCAP it seems we exceeded our limit last year. This was due to the way bonuses are paid out. We were allowed to go over last year, but that does come off this years limit.

there are other issues that count for cap too. things like private jets have to be counted according to Doug McLean an actual GM's comment on the TSN fa special.

we as fans, take things far too much for granted when we think we understand the cap.

teams dont only spend money on 20 contracts as the season plays out. we actually spend money on 23, 24, 25 or more contracts on many nights do to the natural progress of human lives.

if we push right to the cap we are going to be screwed like Vancouver was a couple seasons ago where they kept sending a few players back and forth to the minor leagues every other night on off days cause that every 2000 or so saved was all that was saving their bacon from having to jettison a real player they wanted to keep.

if we commit right to the cap this season, and next year the cap doesnt go up then we are going to start to end up really screwed when we want to promote a kid like Tukko Rask or Zach Hamil up and just cant fit him in under our room.

Ward/Murray/Axelsson repersent around 9 million dollars in possible cap relief we might expect to get over the next year or so... they also repersent 2/3rds of our top line and one half of our top defensive pairing.

look around and tell me how we bring in ANYTHING that CAN PLAY AT ALL for this money or less in the same roles???

where is the other cap relief coming from as we look at the next couple years?

I see a poster here want to dump Mowers to save caproom. Who the heck in the NHL makes less money than Mowers? I could see an argument that would favor dumping Mowers in order to get someone who is a BETTER PLAYER here, but better players MAKE MORE MONEY.

if we crap our cap situation anymore than it already is expect our third and fourth lines to be made up of NOTHING BUT MARK MOWER types within a couple years.

We've spent 25 million dollars now on Chara/Savard/Fernandez/Bergeron/Sturm and for this year and next we are committed to these guys. After that it is possibly Rask and his 3.5 mill per season deal joining this group. Whatever...

this is the core... this is our group of superstars... this is the 5 men we are paying half of our total room too.

We arent in the market for more 5 million per season guys now. We need compliments that will help our kids develop and we need flexible cap room in a season or two when kids like Kessel and Kobasew and Stuart come up for their next contracts and some moron team like the Oilers take a run at us if we dont have the proper room to keep the kids that are actually worth keeping at that time

SHANAHAN WILL NOT SIGN FOR $3M. GUERIN JUST SIGNED FOR $4.5M, DO YOU HONESTLY THINK SHANAHAN IS GOING TO TAKE ANYTHING LESS?? Yes, I used all caps on purpose, I'm trying to drive a point home. It boggles my mind that so many people think Shanny will sign for anything less than what Guerin got. It's ridiculous.

That would be his salary in the NHL, it is much less in the AHL, and it is also quite wrong if I'm not mistaken, as the rookie max is only like $850K, even for someone drafted the year Tuukka was. That $3.2 is way off methinks.

And thank you. Seconded 1000%. I cannot believe the numbers people are tossing out that they actually think Shanahan will for and not laugh so hard he pulls a stomach muscle at. We're talking in the $5 million ballpark for Shanny after that Guerin deal, and at the very, very least something more that what Billy got. It's insane what some people throw out. Insane.

DISCLAIMER: I said I don't know if the Bruins went over. If Kessel earned any part of the bonuses he could have received, then the B's went over by that amount. If he didn't earn any of them, then the B's didn't go over.

As of right now, I'm assuming that the B's did not go over, and my numbers reflect that assumption - but if it comes out that the B's did in fact go over, then I'll adjust accordingly.

What are they paying him like a college football coach??? Base salary $45,000 bonuses including $100,00 for waking up, $50,000 for driving to work, $10,000 per brushed tooth....

You're only counting 20 NHL players. The cap is based on 23, I believe. So you can take at least another $960k off that number, if those two unnamed players make the league minimum of $480k. Which leaves you slightly less than $2.8 to spend on one more guy.

With that in mind, the one player that you could sign at that number who'd have the biggest impact on the season, and go a long way toward making this team 'harder to play against' would be Mike Peca. He wins faceoffs, he's gritty, he'd do as much to cut down our GAA as a top4 defenseman, he'd bring out the best in Axe (expecting they play together), he's a leader, he hits, he blocks a ton of shots, in short, he'd be a very good value at ~$2.5mil.

Kessel-Savvy-Muzz
Sturm-Bergeron-Bochski
Axe-Peca-Kobasew

I'd give Peca a shot - you can then stuff Mowers back in the minors where he belongs and save a few hundred grand on the cap.

Most of the good defensemen are gone, and we needed one of those, so a good defensive center seems like a logical addition.
