Being a mets/islanders fan born in 1984 I don't have too many great sports memories. But by far my favorite sports moment was walking into the Coliseum for game 3 of the 2002 series. Nothing i had ever seen before or seen since matches that electricity and excitement. I don't think I will ever feel that ever again. Games 3, 4, and 5 are the greatest sporting events i have ever been to. And like many of you have already said, Bates' penalty shot was the absolute loudest i've ever heard an arena. Just unreal.

The Ventura grand slam single was pretty cool to be at as well. But baseball<<<<<<<hockey.

Bates penalty shot reminds me of Endy Chavez "The Catch" last year, both sick and the stadiums went insane, but in the end neither led anywhere, and I get crazy chills when I watch both

I will never forget that Game 4 against Toronto.

I bought the tix off of eBay and they were together, 5th from the top, section 334. The guy I bought them from was going to hand me the tickets when I got to the Coliseum. Mrs. Frrrunkis and I had gotten caught up in traffic on the Belt and didn't arrive until 10 mins into the 1st. The guy sent his 12 year old son out to give me the tix...the kid handed them to me, then literally ran away. I thought that was wierd but I just thought he was just anxious to get back to the game. I looked at the tix, and they ended up being two sections apart. I was pissed! Luckily, we ended up finding two seats together in Section 333, 4 rows from the top (right next to the TV camera scaffolding), so we just settled in there and hoped that no one was going to arrive. No one did, and we enjoyed probably the best game of our lives to date.

Being a heterosexual male, I never thought I'd be hugging a group of complete drunks in the row behind and in front of me. But after the Bates' goal we were high-fiving, screaming, jumping, and hugging. Then we all frolicked naked in the parking lot...not gay, right?

Hey, why not have DiPietro in our shoot out line up?

I just can't help myself

One of the more fun and memorable series in the last 5 or 6 years in the entire NHL. It's just a shame we came up short.

EDIT: This thread just got stickied--nice!

I remember the penguin doll with the noose around its neck on the cover of newsday. I believe it was right after the isles took them back to pittsburgh. Can't beat Bowman's disgust and Mario seeking out arbor to shake his hand. What a team that 93 team was
thank you for saving me the time searching youtube for this to refute the "best Isles video ever" claim. while subjective, I would have to personally have to disagree. The only thing I will give the Bates penalty shot is that it was on home ice. Remember, we sucked for quite some time before winning the patrick division that year as well!

Anybody 30 or younger, such as myself, who does not have clear and active memories of the "good old days", only has this as the last real success of the Isles, and while the Bates shot was great, it was just one game. It was, for me, just as exciting as the devils game last year to clinch the po's, if judged solely on the merits of the game. Obviously, the toronto game had the 7 year drought preceeding it going for it.

As far as that 93 pitt game goes, wow, I had to listen to it on the radio as I was stuck on Fire Island. Every time we heard them even mention Lemieux or Jagr's name we cringed!!! But holy cow how sweet it was to win to not only make a series out of it without our best player, but to win, and to see my favorite Islander, Ray Ferraro turn in the performance of a lifetime, awesome...

While I wasn't alive for this (I'm 24) this is by far the best Islander goal. I've seen it countless times as I'm sure we all have but seeing it again just gave me goosebumps (keep in mind its like 90 degrees out). While I enjoy all of these videos and have posted several myself, there is NO way to argue this was THE biggest goal this franchise has ever experienced.

Not Bates' goal in a series we lost?

A little Arron Asham love:

I love how Asham stands totally still before he starts throwing punches, it's intimidating as hell. If the Isles let him go, which they probably should at this point given the way they've chosen to shape their roster, they will be losing the best middleweight fighter in the NHL.

So I bought tickets for my dad and I for games 3 & 4 and we were going to fly up. But something came up and he couldn't go, so I ended up taking a friend of mine who's a diehard Ranger fan to game 4.

He will never admit it, to this day, but when Bates scored, he was jumping up and down and screaming his lungs out, caught up in the excitement. The building was, literally, shaking. Plaster was coming down off the ceiling.

That goal was all those years of frustration, all the years of disappointment, all of the heartache, washed away for at least one night. Hempstead Turnpike sounded like we'd won a Cup with all the "Let's Go Islanders!" honking.

That night, for the first time in years, everyone on the Island was an Islander fan.
