First round picks on the team...

Can you guess how many first round picks are on the team? I was just messing around and looked at the roster page on the Flyers site.




There are 14 first round picks. I knew we had a bunch, but I forgot Goat, Hatcher and Rathje were all firsts, and I didn't know Jason Smith was as well. It was just kinda surprising to me.

I already posted this in another thread last week actually. 4 dmen (Coburn, Smith, Hatcher, Gauthier) and all but 2 forwards I believe (Kapanen and Knuble).

Maybe they will all hit their max potential at once this year and we will win the cup

"On paper" we should be wicked scarey.

I was looking up old first round draft choices a couple of months ago, and I couldn't believe how many we had. I had no clue we even had this many until reading the posts above.

here's another fun fact, the Roster on the Flyer's site list 16 Canadians, 2 Americans, and 4 Fins.

What is more impressive in my opinion is how many young 1st rounders we have. Particularly on forward of course with 7 1st rounders 25 or younger and most likely (tho arguably) all but Eager being top 6 forward calibre players.

Hartnell 6th, 2000
Umberger 16th, 2001
Upshall 6th, 2002
Lupul 7th, 2002
Eager 23rd, 2002
Carter 11th, 2003
Richards 24th, 2003

Then add Downie as a potential to make the 4th line even this season. Just wow.

I think the Wings, by far, have the most players taken in later rounds. They did something right. Also, only 2 first round picks is amazing with the quality of their team.

Winning the Cup and Top-Four First Round Picks

I seem to remember hearing someone say during the NHL Draft two years ago that no team had ever won the Cup without having a former top-four pick on their roster. If true, we'd better promote James vanRiemsdyk fast. Or revoke the Joni trade.
