Barret Jackman vs. this year's top rookies

So, if Jackman was in his rookie year this year, how would he compare to Raycroft, Ryder, et al. Do you think that Jackman would still win the ROY award?

I wouldn't even have him in my top 4.
Raycroft - Ryder - Hunter - Pitkanen, then Jackman

I may be biased, but I think Pitkanen has been just as good as Jackman was last year. Jackman was very solid defensively and played a big role on his team. Pitkanen has also played a big role and has taken a pp that was in the bottom 10 last year and moved it to 1st overall in the league. I think Pitkanen should be top 3, so I think Jackman would have been fighting to be in the final 3 in a very deep rookie class.

i don't think the gap between hamhuis and pitkanen is all that huge. joni has been better offensively, hamhuis defensively...though neither is a slouch in either department.

I think Pitkanen is at least as good as Jackman was last year.

It is possible that Jackman wouldn't even make the all rookie team this year. Not that he wasn't very good, but those sort of recognitions tend to over emphasize offensive contributions.

not only that, but with this years crop, youd have to throw in zetterburg. Zetterburg had a superior offensive season than jackman. But it was overshadowed because he was the ONLY one. there for Jackmans great defensive play stood out.

If this was this year [as per the debate], Zetterburgs offensive numbers would be on par with the other rookies. there for Jackman wouldnt stand out like he did.

Jackman and Zetterburg last year, either deserved it. Cant debate who won it, but you couldnt debate if the other did. The reasoning given at the time was because there was so little offensive output on a whole from the rookies that you couldnt ignore Jackmans defensive game, which is the truth. But that would be 100% different under this years scenerio.

Last year was a bad year for rookies, nothing against Jackman but it's the truth.

This year has been one of the better rookie crops in recent memory.

The guy have 51 points and he's playing like a vet out there. I can accept that people list Raycroft, Pitkanen or Hunter ahead of Mike because to be honnest, they're all pretty even, but when I see somebody rank Ryan freakin' Malone ahead of Ryder, I cannot stop laughing...

Then maybe you should watch him play a bit more.

If you were watching him play a bit more you'd see that he gets 4 min/game more than Ryder gets... 4 min/game more than any other rookies for all that matters. This tends to help you post better numbers !

But Malone has managed one more goal than Ryder without the benefit of quality passers like Koivu and Ribeiro. Got to give credit where credit is due.

Sure but Ryder as been by far our most consistent player all year long !!
he went from the 4th line(10 first games of the year) to the 2nd line(young line.. with Hossa-Ribeiro-Ryder lasted about 6 games) to the 1st line with (zednik and Koivu about 35/40 games) now he's demoted to the ribeiro line and he still produces at the same pace !!
this guy is a stud !! very complete player ! sure he's no flashy .. but he get the job done all the times !! and again no love for ryder (except habs fans)
i would just like to see one time a guy cheering for another team than the habs saying that he's impressed by ryder at least give him honorable mention!
I would also appreciate if somebody tell me why he dont like him,etc..

Malone plays for the Penguins.

Let me say that again: Malone playes for the PENGUINS!

That is all...

bingo. factor in that Ryder plays for the Habs, and you've solved the mystery as to why one is so hyped and the other is terribly underrated.

I agree with the posters above. Malone may play more, but he's doing it on lines with guys like MIKE EASTWOOD.

Barret Jackman was playing on a D squad without Chris Pronger. Him and MacInnis basically shared Pronger's workload together. That has to count for something.

Thank you (Enoch and PJ as well)

Glad to see some people can give the guy credit where it's due....his production may be a little lower than Ryder and Hunter, but he has been amazing and has played on a far worse team than the Habs/Isles (both playoff teams)....IMO definately in the top rookie class this year, though he won't (and IMO shouldn't) win the Calder, as Raycroft has been just too good. Instead of laughing when people rank the 'lowly' Malone with/above the 'mighty' Mike Ryder, try looking beyond the numbers and swallowing your home-team prospect pride for a second....

As for the initial question, I would not be so sure to rank Jackman ahead of Pitkanen, so I definately don't think it would go to him this year, as Raycroft should win it.
