I have the fear that once again the NYR's are becoming too offensively minded. One of the best and most imporant parts of last season's success was the PK, and defense in general. It kind of has me worried, if Roszi gets hurt and Bett's goes down, we are in bad trouble.

Both Drury and Gomez are excellent penalty killers. Throw in Straka, Betts, Avery and Cullen and we'll be fine.

Roszival getting hurt for any length hurts all aspects of the Rangers defense since he plays the most minutes and in all situations. There are several forwards who can replace Ortmeyer (I'd say Drury is at least equal on the penalty kill) and I'm sure a player like Callahan was also pretty solid down in Hartford. Thee will be some growing pains because of the changes, but I don't think the penalty kill will ultimately be worse.

Yes... Significantly...

Think losing Orts will be one of those where everyone looks back on it midway through the season and regrets it. He brought a lot to the table but some people are on this scoring binge.

Does anyone have stats from last season's PK before and after Orts triumphant return? That should give some idea of the PK for next season no? I understand that last season the Rangers didnt have Drury and Gomez (is he even a regular pk'r?) but it should at least give us an idea.

Right, I mean... this is a team with a completely different make-up. I think the PK'll be fine, Gomer and Drury will help in that regard.

Where's Orty? Did he sign with another team, or is there just not enough roster spots for him?

As good as Ortmeyer was, he was still just one player. We still have very good PK'ers in Betts, Drury, and even Avery. Maybe the unit won't be as good as last season but I think we're more than fine for now. Lundqvist should help a ton too.

I think the Rangers should start focusing more on not taking stupid penalties in the first place. Will make things easier that's for sure

i agree. shanny is also good at pk's, but ortey was also a good foward defensemen. He might have missed the net a few times on break aways *coughs* but he was still a really good player.

the pk will be BETTER then last year. i know that everyone thinks jed is a good cause he hustles and blocks a few shots, but we still have avery, betts, cullen, hossa and drury is better defensively then jed. and without jed we might actually score a few shorthanded goals because now all our pkers will be equiped with a full set of thumbs

Ortmeyer? We're talking about Jed here right? Wow that's a player I'm glad we let go. Don't get me wrong he did a decent job here, but he's nothing special at all.

Rangers PK won't miss a beat with him gone.

#1 reason the pk will be better...faceoff % of our 4 centers last season

gomez-52.2%
drury-58.8%
cullen-52.3%
betts-54.6%

you win the faceoff on the pk and clear the puck that kills off 30-40 seconds. we were awful on draws last year, this year i expect us to be one of the best. and this will make our pp better too.

shanny should NOT be killing penalties. at his age you need to cut his ice back and the best way to do that is keep him off the pk. last year he was used WAY too much early in the year and he had nothing left in the 2nd half. imo the ONLY time he should be used on the pk is in emergency like the other pkers are in the box or hurt.

The over/under for the number of games before a Jed groupie complains that the Rangers are missing him is...

they are already saying that so put the over/under at zero and take the under

drury plays the PK and is pretty good at it plus the fact that Gomez played in that devils system all these past years and could probably be good at it too

you obviously don't know what you are talking about. messier said that no body works harder and jd said he was a future captain. we started to turn around our season last year after he came back. i'm not saying the penalty kill will be terrible, but he was our best penalty killer, it won't be as good. not everybody has to score. especially this year.

Drury will pick up where Orts left off, and will score a few shorties as well... we added a player that is 10 times the player that Orts is.
