Edmonton Oil Kings

Season starts vs. Kootenay Sept. 20 7PM.

Anyone else excited for some WHL hockey in Edmonton?

Re: The Oil Kings First choice in the CHL draft:
Tomas Vincour. In 41 games playing for Kometa Brno in the Under 20 Czech Junior League, the 16-year old Vincour had 15 goals, 24 assists, 39 points and 58 PIMS. He has also played 5 career games in the Czech 1.Liga (pro 1st division). Vincour, a 6’2”, 198-pound forward, was born in 1990, and will be eligible for the NHL Entry Draft in 2009.

That will probably be a long first season, but it's nice to have the WHL back in Edmonton.

They had a very high pick in the Bantam draft and took a d-man from the Edmonton area - anybody remember his name and if he'll have a chance to crack the roster as a 16 year old?

Good to see WHL in Edmonton. How come they wont put a team in Winnipeg? Is it because Winnipeg has the Moose?

Sherwood Park’s Mark Pysyk was the Oil King’s first draft pick, selected third overall. The 15-year old defenceman from the Strathcona Warriors of the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League (AMBHL) scored 15 goals and 33 assists this season, and recently played in the Alberta Cup Bantam hockey tournament. He measures 6’ tall, 165 pounds.

He probably makes it due to it being an expansion team. Might not see a lot of ice time.

Yes I'm pumped about the season. Have a 50% interest in season tickets.

Geez, if the Oil Kings do better than the Oilers they might draw some fans away from them.

I played golf with Pysyk in early June, pretty sure he told me he would be playing AAA Midget this year. (or Bantam, I forget).

Next season (2008-09) will be his year to step in.

sounds right... he'd get eaten up as a 165 lb defenceman in the WHL this year.

If he's 16 he's playing midget...15 and he could play in the 15yr Old league but if he's that good he'll probably make the jump straight to AAA.

I am going to sticky this one as I am sure there will be plenty of Oil King discussion throughout the year.

Thanks for the suggestion Raoul!

I think Winnipeg is to far east, and travel would be to much in the WHL's eyes.

Mark Pysyk... I don't think he'll be ready yet.

As far as i know, he's only alowed to play 3 or so games in the WHL this year, as are all bantam draftees. Next year he'll be a rookie and hopefully we'll have a franchise guy for a couple years

15yr. old restrictions
15 yr. olds are allowed to play a maximum of 5 games in the WHL, until their parent team is eliminated from the playoffs.

Players to watch:

-Tomas Vincour, C ('09)

Hyper-talented forward. The type that puts bums in the seats, and just what this franchise needs to start with.

-Mark Pysyk, D ('10)

Gifted offensive-defenseman. Rushes the puck with ease. Fine skater that should excel on our ice.

-Dalyn Flette, G ('09)

Watched him since Bantam. He's going to be a very good goalie- mentally very sound, excellent technique already. Couldn't believe we acquired him for so little.

-Devin Balness, C ('10)

He's going to surprise a lot of people. A fantastic offensive player as evidenced by his minor hockey numbers. Continually knocked for being so small, but he just keeps proving everyone wrong. Great competitor.

For two years, this team is going to be atrocious. Archibald, Cepek, Figren and the other vets can hold the fort until the younger guys are ready to take over. After that, we'll have a star player at each position.

Bugg,

the players you listed will barely factor this year at all outside of Vincour.

Pysyk is playing Midget AAA but will see spot duty with the Oil Kings until his season is over. Flette is #3 on the depth chart right now, maybe a trade or injury gets him more game time?

In my opinion, the interesting guys to watch this year who can contribute:

Tommy Tartaglione in net - better stats than Archibald last year albeit in fewer games but sounds like he could make it a 50/50 split this year.

Craig McCallum - led the Saskatchewan Midget AAA in scoring last year, was listed by Edmonton and is expected by Bob Green to be one of the few offensive weapons.

and Vincour.
