a reasonable price for both players =)
I mean, Ribeiro was our leading points scorer last year (obviously because Modano and Morrow being out long term but that doesnt matter) and he would have probably got more if he had went to arbitration.. I think =/ this probably leaves 3 mill left to sign a couple other RFA's assuming DA wants to keep that 4 mill cushion to pick up a player later on.
Why only one year? What's Army's plan next summer?
Ribeiro might have only wanted a one year deal to test UFA next year, if that's the case he can leave for all I care.
With Ribeiro on a one year deal it makes no sense to deal Jokinen, I'd have Jokinen take Ribeiro's spot as the second line center next season.
Maybe the Stars only wanted Ribeiro to sign a one year deal then give him a long term deal next off-season.
I think a 1 year deal for Ribs is fine. It plays into the large amount of flexibility the team will have next offseason. They'll have another year to resolve the 2nd line center question which is unclear at this point. Also it's probably not a bad thing to have Ribeiro in another contract year. I don't mean that in a bad way... just reality.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Lundqvist will still be an RFA after this contract expires. He still only has one season of NHL experience under his belt.
I like the Riberio signing at one year. I agree with the previous poster in that if all goes well Jokinen should be able to take Rib's spot if he leaves.
Also this gives us more flexibility for next summer's free agent crop (which is significantly better than this year's). Guys like Heatley, Hossa, Demitra, Legwand, and Marleau are all going to be UFAs and the Spezzas of the world are going to be RFAs.
We have a lot of money coming off the books after this season:
Norstrom - $4.25 million
Ribeiro - $2.8 million
Guerin - $2.2 million (remainder of his buyout)
That's almost $10 million right there. I think we will definitely be a major player in next year's free agent market.
