Pre-game rituals?

I know everyone has to have at least ONE, so what is it?

I always dress the exact same way every time. I can only remember one time that I started to put on my left skate before my right skate and I actually untied it, laced up the right one, and then laced up the left one.

I jump up and down outside the locker room like a jackass for about ten minutes before everyone shows up.

I gotta show up early to pull that off, that **** takes dedication.

I show up at the rink at least an hour early. I take my gear in, sign in, run to the restroom and take a squirt in the third urinal and wash my hands in the first sink, look around in the pro shop, head outside to have a pre-game smoke. Then I go through the doors on whichever side our locker room is. Once in the locker room, the mask is the first thing out of the bag. The right skate goes on, then the left. Then the shorts, left leg pad then right leg pad. Go fill up the water bottle, watch an ongoing game if there is one while I drink one bottle of water, refill it, and put the rest of my pads on and sit silently until the game.

Just this week, I added wearing batting gloves and got rid of drinking two energy drinks before the game.

Too much? It's too much isn't it?

If it works for you its ok although im sure with that long list, you must forget some rituals every game. Me, i get dressed quick then i focuse while listening to techno music to get me pumped.

Lots and LOTS and stretching is my only real pre-game ritual.

Everyonce in a while I'll start to put the pads on the wrong way, but so far I haven't forgotten a step.

It annoys the hell out of me when people go on before me, lol. It just don't feel right unless I'm the first one on.

Make up new excuses:
  • The puck bounced
  • I thought the play was off-side
  • My stick broke
  • Wardrobe malfunction
  • I lost an edge/a contact/my balance
  • I did not hydrate properly/have time to stretch beforehand
  • I saw a really hot girl in the stands
  • Sunspots
  • You're telling me no one else saw the orangutan juggling the cherry bombs?

Befor each game I play in,I find a place to sit in the stands and I retape both of my sticks.I hell on my wallet, with all the tape I use but I still do it.It is also nice to be able to look down on the ice,and get my mind right for the game.

i always walk into the locker room, open the tattered remains of my hockey bag, and begin to put my deteriorating gear on, and make the saddest face in the whole world in the hopes maybe someone will give me something that doesnt predate the fall of communism.

My only ritual is to stretch certain problem areas. And to remind myself that I play the game because I enjoy it, not to take myself too seriously.

No superstitions or anything - they can be fun in a way, but also a drag and unnecessary thing to worry about if you mess it up.

After pregame warmups and before the puck is dropped I stand at the top of my crease and just take deep breaths and try to relax and slow everything down.

I love to do a quick lap around the arena I'm playing and just stand somewhere and shoot for a bit. I also write my girlfriends name on the tape of my sticks for goodluck. The habit has continued through quite a few girls too...

Always put my left skate and left shinguard on before i put my right skates and right shinguard on. After that, put everything else on then just look at the ground for about 10 minutes to just get focused. A bomb probably go off in my team's locker room and I'd still be looking at the ground. After that, I'm good to go.

I've done that ever since I hit our goalie in his special place when he had no cup (I couldn't aim too well) and he couldn't play that game (much less move) so we were basically screwed...long time ago though. For now I generally do some stretches, quick weight lift to make the stick seem lighter. I always keep my shin guard just over the tongue of my skates. I never change my stick tape unless it's really bad or messing me up. I also keep my pant suspenders over my shoulder pads. I need smaller equipment I think...
