Does he? He had zero success early in the season playing with Ruutu and Skinner. He had great success late in the season playing with Tlusty and LaRose/Bowman/whathaveyou.

Much as I would love to, it's not fair to criticize Maurice for something he didn't do; however, Ladd's Carolina tenure was only 137 games, during which he produced 50 points. He was still young and unproven when he was traded away, and he played 3rd-4th line minutes in Chicago too. I think in Ladd's case they just gave up on him too quickly, not that he was misused here.

Ladd finally got top six minutes here after Stillman was traded and had 10 points in his last 10 games...then was traded by our useless general manager because he wanted a "center" with Brind'amour having suffered a season-ending injury. Ruutu played the first period of his first game at center, then didn't see that position for about two years because he blows at it. In truth, Ruutu had barely played center since before the lockout, which had been the same story with Trevor Letowski. That's twice in under two years that Rutherford acquired a winger to play a key role on his team as a center, only for that player to end up playing wing almost immediately and the team still having a hole at center. I guess Rutherford didn't realize that there were good reasons that those players had been playing wing for years.

The trade made no sense and it still makes no sense whatsoever. We got a player who was at best equal to Ladd (and actually had worse production that season), was more expensive and two years closer to free agency. The three years after the trade we paid Ruutu $2.25M, 3M and 4M while the Hawks/Thrashers paid Ladd 1.55M, 1.65M and 2.35M. The effect of Rutherford's brilliant management in this case was to reduce his ability to spend elsewhere while not getting a better player. That's it.

As for whether or not Ladd was being misused, I'll say this: if a player dresses for a game and doesn't play a shift, or dresses for a game and plays 50 seconds, and that player is 20 years old, and his general manager doesn't send him to the AHL, then that general manager is a moron.

I wasn't defending the trade, I was just saying that Ladd wasn't exactly an offensive dynamo that was being stifled in a Hurricanes jersey. I was really pissed at the time, and still think it was a bad move, but the idea that the Ladd we saw here is the same Ladd that is captaining a team today isn't quite accurate, in my opinion.

I'm more pissed that we didn't re-aquire him from the Hawks when the best they could come up with was a second round pick and a bust who was going to bolt for the KHL as soon as his contract expired.

Yep....my mistake.

He was still not developing fast enough to suit JR or Pete, all the while being misused. They blew it on that kids development. I wasn't a big fan of the Ruutu trade, and would undo it now in a hearbeat. I think Ladd is clearly the better player. He still plays with a chip on his shoulder when he plays here, even though he's best friends with Ward.

True, but Staal just plain sucked early in the season so it wouldn't have matter who he was with then. I also think he and Tlusty have good chemistry and it wouldn't matter if it was LaRose (who's done fine), Stewart or someone else.

That said, I do think Staal does do better with a guy who is a playmaker type (Whitney) who can feed him the puck in prime scoring positions and a guy with a lot of speed (like Cole) who can open things up for him. Skinner is more creative on his own and is more of a shoot first guy and Ruutu is physical, but doesn't have the speed. Staal still needs to be more consistent like he has since Muller took over, but IMO, those guys compliment his style of play better.

1,000 points? What a joke. I once saw Chris Neil score a goal and then turtle away from a fight. All of this while playing about fourteen minutes in the game.

Youtube or it didn't happen.

I'd like to see Whitney back here on a one or two-year deal. I'd prefer one year to avoid any steep drop-off in play, but I think it'll likely take a two year commitment to get him to sign. He would likely fit anywhere on the wing in the top six and, like others have said, provide a needed veteran presence in the locker room.
