To me, this seems similar to the Big Ten deciding to name their divisions "Legends" and "Leaders." Maybe they had good intentions, but when the near universal reaction is either condemnation or laughter, then you know you goofed.

Sorry, but it's ridiculous. If they wanted to do that, just call themselves the Ottawa Reds. Probably wouldn't have been a popular choice, but almost assuredly wouldn't be getting ridiculed by most people that hear of it.
Is Sox a word? If thats really the extent of your problem with it, that it's not a real word, you need better things to worry about.

The original ottawa hockey club also wore those colors,

Not really, though. Naming your team after your colors is common, but tossing two words together in a nonsensical fashion is not, and claiming that it's respecting your city's sports heritage is just code for they couldn't come up with anything better.

As I said, the Ottawa Reds would've accomplished everything that the "RedBlacks" supposedly does, with maybe 1% of the ridicule.

Guys, get it right.....it's "REDBLACKS"!

Quote:
Fresh off their official name-unveiling ceremony Saturday, the Ottawa Rouge et Noir (or RedBlacks for those who prefer less-than-grammatical English) have got themselves into another controversy. The RedBlacks name's been unpopular enough, with many fervently criticizing it since it first popped up in January, and the official unveiling of the name Saturday created plenty of further Internet mockery (including this superb "Ottawa Rod Blacks" logo), but that had largely died down by Monday morning. The franchise apparently stuck their foot right back into the sarcastic fire of the web, though, reportedly sending out a note requesting that media spell their name with ALL CAPS. That produced the expected Internet reaction, from CFL media, CFL fans and even some other sports types who wanted to join on the MOCKERY:

This just keeps getting better.

I could actually be with you if your problem was with naming the team after the colors, because I agree it does sound weird. But complaining about it being a made up word is silly. So if it was Red Blacks or Red-Blacks or Red and Blacks it would be less ridiculous?

How far are they from pulling a new "Ottawa apologizes" moment?

It becomes less stupid, but still a pointless name choice.

strange name.

I don't know if I am going to like this over time. Points for originality I suppose.

used to be a big ottawa rough riders fan in the day... hated the name renegades.. and the red blacks.. redblacks... what ever just dosnt do it for me...
i think that they should try and go back to the rough riders and to hell with what everyone thinks... not only that i think the other 7 teams should rename themselves with a variation of the rough riders...
so you have..
the sask. roughriders
the ott rough riders
the tor. ruff riders
the winn. ruf riders
the bc ruph riders
the edmon. rugh riders
the calg. rruffffriders
the ham. r-uf riderrs...
and the montreal alouettes ( a distict group.)

Wasn't there talk of them calling the other team (The Renegades) The Beavers a while back? That seems way more appropriate, it's Canada's capital and what's more Canadian than a beaver anyway?

This is the way I feel also. I couldn't have summed it up better.
And just because we are talking about the RedBlacks now doesn't mean that will always be the case. The novelty eventually will rub off and merchandise and other sales of jerseys and the like will level off.
Bad publicity is not good in sports.

I think that was done intentionally so back in the day when people typed "Maple Leafs" into Wikipedia it'd go to the hockey team's website and not the tree's.

Just a guess.

From wikipedia:

The Maple Leafs say that the name was chosen in honour of the Maple Leaf Regiment from World War I. As the regiment is a proper noun, its plural is Maple Leafs

Ya, I know, it was a joke. I'm fairly certain Wikipedia didn't exist in 1917

Finally wandered over to the football section with the CFL season kicking off this weekend. I still think the best suggestion I have heard is the "Regiment".
