Niners sign ex-Giants RB Brandon Jacobs

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/77...rs-source-says

One-year deal with the Niners. Joins Manningham as ex-Giants to go to the Red and Gold.

This team is absolutely beefing up. Gore, Hunter and Jacobs? Even if Jacobs -- who has been chastised for his play by Giants fans -- is just depth (because the first two can get it done), still, wow. And I'm not even discussing the rest of the team.

I like it. Niners are really loading up their offense this offseason.

Jacobs has become extremely inconsistent but he's a great addition on depth. When he's on, he's on and its damn near impossible to stop him.

Interesting that he'd choose a team with two good RBs, considering he complained about getting less snaps than Bradshaw in the past couple years. But he is much more effective when he's not the only one running well. Definitely interested to see how the Niners use him, but I'm assuming mostly in 3rd & short or 4th & short situations. And as Bob Richards said, when Jacobs has a fire under his ass, he's a literal beast. Just make sure you hold your breath when he gets into the end zone, because he has the tendency to be a dick.

I have bittersweet feelings about his time as a Giant, as do most Giants fans. They parted ways on a positive note and he, after all, is the Giants franchise leader in rushing TDs. I wish him good luck in San Fran.

An upgrade over "dancing shoes Dixon" any day.

He's surprisingly bad at 3rd/4th and short.

This could work if the 49ers can get him to run downhill instead of bouncing around for gains of 1... or if their line can open gigantic holes for him.

There is a reason Deion Sanders nicknamed him the "tiptoe burglar." Honestly, I don't know why the 49ers signed Jacobs, but considering that they probably got him for absolutely nothing, I can deal with it. I really do not like him, but I suppose he could help. Jacobs is horrible in short yardage situations, but he can be pretty good if you can get him to run downhill. No matter what, he's an upgrade on Anthony Dixon. Then again, the only thing that Dixon brings to the 49ers is an elite flag-waving ability.

Jacobs is shot.

He can't do goal-lines and short yardage all that effectively because he runs too high.

Best goal line guys are short bowling ball types.

I am not a fan of the guy at all - I think he is a total clown. I do think too that he is on his last legs and isn't a great short yardage back.

I'm not a huge fan of it but like Blades said it's low risk. He probably will be playing a lot less than he did last year so maybe that'll make him more effective.

I like him because they can do some different things with him.

If you can trick the D into a nickel or dime with Davis, you could run a no huddle switch and bring in Jacobs to run against small DBs.

I don't think he is useful if he's given a heavy load but spotted in he offers another angle to attack defenses.

He wasn't playing a whole lot with the Giants the last two years anyway.

The one thing about Jacobs is that he is very well schooled in pass protection. Pat Flaherty and Jerald Ingram apparently do a very good job at this as all the Giant running backs in recent memory have done a very good job at pass blocking and picking up blitzes (to the naked eye).

He won't be getting 150 carries like he did last year. Unless Gore suffers a long term injury.

Even if Gore got injured I imagine Hunter would be the primary back.

They've been saying Giants are done since the 2000 superbowl.
