Habs will probably match any Subban offer sheet.

The time to offer sheet is already gone, that window was before the season started after the lockout, when the Habs weren't totally convinced with him and only gave him the bridge deal.

$1,682,194 to $3,364,391 - 2nd round pick
$3,364,391 to $5,046,585 - 1st round pick and 3rd round pick
$5,046,585 to $6,728,781 - 1st round pick, 2nd round pick and 3rd round pick
$6,728,781 to $8,410,976 - two 1st round picks, 2nd round pick and 3rd round pick
$8,410,976 - four 1st round picks

I hope MacT offer sheets Subban to 8x$8.4M contract. If Montréal matches, try to sign Markov as they won't have the cap space to sign both.
Offer sheet compensation is now based on the cap hit average which is determined by being the less of 5 years or total contract.

So in your case it would $13.44M compensation. (67.2/5 as 5 is the lesser between 8 years and 5 years) So we either go for 5x8.4 or get ready to risk 4 1st rounders.

You can't sign players to 8 year contracts. Not only that, but anything over 4 at that cap hit would push it into the 4 1sts bracket.

Also, the Canadiens would match anyway

When Yak is 30, Staal is 39. So if you have faith in Yak, you'd think he'd be quite productive still at 30 for the long term.

I like Staal though, it's hard to turn down a No.1 C

Ultimately, he only has 2 years left on his deal with a NTC. I don't see a scenario where he waives that to stay in Edmonton.
adding staal would be the #1 offseason play no doubt, it allows us to slide RNH to 2nd line and have easier matchups and gives us a cup winning experience player who is only 29-30. the cap hit is minor compared to the instant improvement of our 1st and 2nd C's.

Yes I believe I suggested they offer sheet Subban at $8m for an infinite term

I love the flames fans on the main board saying that they wouldn't trade Backlund alone for the 7th overall pick.

Personally, I would rather have Gagner over Backund and I would easily move Gagner for the 7th.

Backlund is a lot grittier than Gagner but I wouldn't call either a 2C on a winning team.

to be fair they did select a high school kid no one had ever heard of a couple years ago, the 7th to us is worth more than it is to calgary

I still imagine them going Ritchie or Fleury, which isn't to say those kids are bad, but at 4, maybe not the best available.

based on the propaganda on the local media in calgary they will gladly take one of the top 3 if they fall or they will be taking Dal Colle. Although i get the feeling brian burke and his new puppet will try to swing the #1 pick in some fashion.

That's quite the line up, I suspect it would finish last, and why would Perron be on the 4th line?
