Back in May when the NHL announced they would not extend CBA, it came out that the Penticton rookie tournament (nominally Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, San Jose and Anaheim teams) would not be held.

Now comes word that the Traverse City rookie tournament will be canceled. Impacted teams: Detroit, Buffalo, Carolina, Columbus, Dallas, Minnesota, New York Rangers and St. Louis.

I never understood the cancellations in the context of the CBA as few of these players would play for their big teams anyway. It's a real loss for Traverse City and particularly Pentiction where the tournament was just getting established. Are the cancellations just punitive or is there a business reason?

Have to assume business. Cause you gotta buy the tickets for the guys to show up @ your home town before tourney, the charter flight to tournament, accommodations, etc.

It's about 3 weeks from when the kids would nominally be reporting.

Florida's rookie tourney cancelled. Invitees: Panthers, Bruins, Hurricanes, Lightning.

(Also noted: Washington Capitals fan convention cancelled.)
