It isn't an excuse. It is just saying that the Ducks are still in this series and could easily win it. He's merely observing that the Ducks had a ton of chances.
Over a 7-game series, the better team almost always wins. In a single game? Not always the case.
The Hawks will have a cakewalk to the Conference Finals, but giving up before a series is even played is the stuff of (some) fans, not professional athletes. And anyone who has watched the playoffs any amount of time (years) knows that anything can happen in a best-of-seven between two quality teams. The road to the Finals goes through Chicago, to be sure, but your comment sells both Anaheim and LA way short.
While the Blues had a poor playoffs, they did win the President's trophy. I don't see how that is an "easy road".
To be honest, though, I am waiting for this Chicago team to keel over. They've played a lot of hockey in the past couple of years.
