Also, the RED WINGS would like to thank Thomas Holmstrom for a wonderful career in Detroit and hopes retirement treats him well. The wings will sign a UFA Defenseman this offseason if no trades come up. However they are looking for a #4 defenseman to play with Kronwall (88) since our #1 pairing is Weber (90) and Quincey (86).
we all feel bad for you .. what a terrible defense you have

Okay, I'm in a little hole with C Derek Stepan. From what I know, you can't really take back contract offers and I offered him A LITTLE less than asking price, from what I know, they usually accept the deal with a slight decrease, but I'm buzzing out because he may not accept and I'm trying to keep my cap management under control since Wade Redden is on the books right now and I can't send him down to the minors yet. That's like an added 7 million to salary I can spend. If I could go back, I would just offer him what he asked. I believe this is the last re-sign phase and I can't afford to lose Stepan to UFA.

That's the other problem, I don't have enough cap space, apparently. I even bought out Mike Rupp, Taylor Pyatt, Stu Bickel and Anton Stralman. I sent a contract to Stepan for about 2.465million and qualified Sauer (who jumped up a lot!) and that was probably a big qualifier amount.

I'm in a real hole as I probably can't resign Stepan and deadline is incoming tonight... I mean, I can probably win him through UFA, but I need Redden off the books and I'm not interested in buying him out. I got a lot of roster holes to fill with the insane amount of buyouts I just made.

Qualifying him should only cost whatever his last contract was I believe. Was he getting that much?

No, but the latest contract I offered him (2.5 million), the qualifier for Michael Sauer (1 million), and my latest buyout penalty (2 million) and it states I have not enough space to qualify Stepan.

So with Redden on the books right now and that buyout penalty, I'm dirt poor and unable to retain or even sign Stepan.

COMMISSIONER: I'd look into Calgary who has a major amount of UFA's/RFA's they need to sign. Not sure if they are inactive, but something needs to be done to save that team before they lose top prospects and great players all to RFA/UFA. This also goes to Carolina, Dallas, and Florida from what I believe.

I'm pretty sure that you can give him a qualifying offer regardless of cap situation, which at the very least would give you a chance to match a potential offer sheet. I'm not 100% though.
