Our back-up goalie is going to play like 5 or 6 games the rest of the year, no need to trade for one. Budaj wasn't even that bad yesterday, keep in mind he has played 2 games in the last 10 months.
This. Budaj is... brace yourselves fellow Habs fans... a BACKUP GOALIE. Yes, he is not as good as Carey Price. He has worse rebound control and positioning, etc, etc, etc.
Habs need to get a little more brave about playing Price back-to-back, really, he's a big boy and can handle it. I don't think they should need to go to Budaj more than a few more times all season (barring injury of course - but that's a-whole-nother kettle of fish caught with canned worms).
Also, Budaj was much better last season than his 2 starts this year. Last season, he was actually a very respectable backup for the Habs. I think it's more fair to base expectations on that larger body of work than on 2 games.
Past that, he's a UFA after this season, so the Habs will be evaluating whether to keep him vs. sign a new backup in the off-season. There's really no need to trade any assets of any kind to change the backup right now.
Really not worth running for a back-up right now. Especially since Price is such a workhorse. We still aren't good enough to contend. Back-up goalie or not. Budaj's contract is expiring, and we can try to replace him with someone else. It really isn't a priority right now.

Bang on! Problem with many Habs fans is they want the back-up to be almost as good as Price. That's not the way it works. They are called back-ups for a reason. Last year, Budaj had a .913 save % and a 2.55 GAA on the 28th overall team. Pretty decent. No need to change him for this year as he will only play a few more games. The Habs can re-evaluate him and the teams options at the end of the season.

Ill agree with not making it a priority right now and the fact that the back up is usually a drop off in quality but there are teams like the rangers who have an excellent backup. I hope he isn't back for next year. price is a workhorse and plays a lot but say an injury prevented him from playing for a while budaj is not the type of guy you can run with.
The problem with Budaj is half the shots he faces are because of bad rebounds. Shots that Price just engulfs or puts in the corner Budaj just pops them into the slot.
The goalie coach isn't doing a good enough job or something, I don't know. But Budaj can't play 8-10 games for this team if they want to make the playoffs.
5-7-5 .913% last year and a lot worse so far this season.
I think Budaj has been awful in his two starts this year.
Terrible rebound control.
Seems really small for 6"1 200lbs
Looks weak physically between the pipe, easy to push.
Unable to freeze the puck in his sight.
Not sharp with angles.
I for one, liked Alex Auld much more than him for a back up.
There are 38 games left for the Habs and Price will start about 34-35 of them. No need to change the back up now. Let Budaj walk in the summer and then look for a UFA who can play maybe 20-25 games a season.
How about bringing up dejardins for some games and let budji play a bunch of games in Hamilton and then come back. That would work till the end of the season.

There's the risk of losing one on waivers, further eroding the Habs poor goaltending depth. All it takes is one team's backup being injured or playing very poorly for a team to snap a guy like Budaj or Desjardins up, even though they appear to be less than ideal choices.
If Florida appeared to be out of it and Theodore was not resigned, I could see giving up one of those extra seconds for Theodore as a rental/insurance.
There's not much to choose from on that list. There's only a couple I could see that would be possibilities and they're Ellis, emery, and maybe Theodore if mtl want to go down that road again. All the others are either going to be starters with there current team or ones that wouldn't be an upgrade over budaj. That's an amazingly thin list of ufa goalies.

Wouldn't mind bringing him back to see him finish his career here
