Always difficult comparing a forward to a defenseman. Are we voting who had the best career? Or who places higher on the all-time list, taking into consideration peak, prime, and career performance?

Curious to hear your argument for peak and all-time.

For peak, I can only think of one or two defenseman that had a better stretch than Potvin's '75-'79. The line between him and Lidstrom is razor thin.

For all-time, I put Potvin ahead of Jagr. Jagr had generational talent, but was a malcontent and had poor effort for a couple of stretches during his career. If you don't think that counts for anything, then ask yourself if you would rate Messier higher all-time if he hung up the skates in '97.

Potvin was the absolute lynchpin of a dynasty, and one of the better leaders in hockey history. I think that also counts for something.

I have Jagr just slightly ahead of Potvin. I doubt that any defenceman outside of Orr had a clearly better peak than Potvin, but his health eventually hindered him from remaining at his ridiculously high level of play in the 70s and early 80s. Jagr has a tremendous peak as well, and clearly has a longevity edge.

I picked Jagr, but it is really difficult to pick between these two. Mostly because of their positions, of course, but also because of how different they were in terms of conducting themselves as teammates. Potvin was the ultimate team player, whereas Jagr had stretches of play that got coaches fired, cities upset with him, and teams wishing they were rid of him.

But I can't dent Jagr's incredible skill. Him by the thinnest of margins. I think the Hart Trophy decided it for me.

top 5 defender of all time that lead his team to 4 straight stanley cups/5 straight stanley cup finals and the first dmen to ever score 1000 nhl points, the fact that jagr is winning this poll is absolutely ridiculous

not really, Jagr is one of the best offensive players of all times, he has 5art ross, and trust me, getting a art is not based on any kind of reputation opposed to the Norris which sometimes can be questionable. He also plays in a much more competitive position, the most talented player usually end up as a center, so it goes without saying. Jagr is a top 10 forward which is > top 5 D, sorry to break it to you. I don't think Bourque, Lidstrom nor Potvin can be considered better than Jagr.

Why do you think the longevity is so much shorter for a elite forward than a elite defender, can it be that it's much more competitive, no?

you seriously think that a winger is more important than a defenseman?

Jagr has won 5 Art Ross Trophies. That's more than anyone not named Gretzky, Lemieux, and Howe. He's approaching 700 goals despite playing in a low-scoring era, and probably would have 700 already if it wasn't for the 3 lockouts he's went through. He's a seven-time First Team All-Star. And he remains a great player at the age of 40.

And he is a clutch player too, he got the 2 Cups with Lemieux at the beginning of his career, remained a great playoff player throughout his career, and has gotten the Czechs a lot of international success.

I expect people on this forum to vote Jagr because they've seen him play and most here have never seen Potvin play and he's not a household name.

Having said that, if I had to pick one to build my team around, I'd chose Potvin and it's not even close.
