Ryan's offensive skills are a level above Lucic's. Ryan has a better shot, better hands, better scoring sense. Lucic has a pretty underrated offensive skill set, but it's easy to see it's not on Ryan's level. Still, Lucic gets his points at a clip comparable to Ryan the past couple of years.

Defensively, Ryan is also better. He's not a Selke candidate, but he's reliable enough to play on the PK, positionally sound, and good instincts. Lucic tends to make risky plays trying to beat a defender with a pass or stickhandle, and a turnover happens.

Physicality, there's no question who's better.

I'm a huge Lucic fan. He's the best power forward in the league, and when I say power forward, I'm talking about what a power forward is really like, not the watered down definition of one that gets banded around nowadays. But I think Ryan has more value overall.

Wow, first time I have seen someone who actually watches the Ducks post. Nice post. Perry and Ryan are both seriously underated on the PK/defensive side.

Well, that & lucic is coming off a season when he was pretty bad in the defensive zone. And I don't think he's killed a penalty for claude in 5 years.

Ryan wouldn't kill penalties in Boston.

Bergeron, Marchand, Kelly, Campbell, Paille, Krejci, and Peverley are better defensively than him.

Doubt Claude would ever want to split up Bergy/Marchand, and then cycle Kelly with any of them, most of the time Campbell.

Seriously though this trade proposal is not bad.

boston gets slightly more scoring
Anaheim gets the scariest forward to play against who is also a first liner.

Its mostly a wash.

I know. Would NEVER do this trade, unless Looch has some secret chronic injury that only the Bruins knew about. I was just explaining why I see the point of Ryan being better defensively. Looch has his moments of brilliance making great outlet passes to his center, but this past season it was far more miss than hit.

With my high coming down on Dougie Hamilton, now believing that he'll struggle for much of the season and learn a lot, or even play in juniors again if there's a lockout, I think the Bruins should be looking to trade for a top-4 d-man, if anything. The offense was good last season and Tyler Seguin is that sniper so many Bruins fans want, he's 20 with a 29-goal season already.

But I worry about the Bruins defense if Hamilton has a Joe Thornton-like rookie year and they don't get anybody else. Aaron Johnson was a shrewd signing, IMO, but he's no top-4 dman.
