This kind of stuff makes me feel bad for the real hockey fans in cities in this league, especially Peoria and Memphis, who have had higher quality teams in their cities, and have to deal with stuff like this.
I guess I'll weigh in as a Knoxville fan and take the ensuing beating afterwards.
First, though, Knoxville was a founding member of the ECHL, so Hurricane Ron's comment is hurtful. At least give us that bit of credit.
As for this situation, I would have a hard time defending Price's actions. If you watch the video, there is no way to spin it into anything other than an intentional shot into the bench. The positioning of the other players makes it impossible to even comprehend anything else. There have been hints otherwise, but you just can't watch that video and believe anything else.
As for why it happened; I will say that the league's poorest official was in charge of that game, and he appeared to let it get to the point of something like this happening. It's no excuse for the ultimate final incident, but it's exactly why it likely devolved to that point. Both teams were seemingly getting mouthy and taking cheap shots, and he never appeared to gain control. He's a problem official in my opinion, and those types of guys perpetuate the reputation of a poor level of play in the league.
I am actually not a Jason Price fan for a variety of reasons, but by all accounts he's a solid guy. He has played over 500 minor league games, mostly in the SPHL, and he has never received supplementary discipline in those many years. I can't defend what I watched, and I wholeheartedly believe he deserves this length of suspension, but his track record warrants him some level of benefit of the doubt or grace.
