Looking at some prospects info I've noticed that some have been drafted by KHL teams even after they already had NHL contracts, such as Tavares....why even waste a pick like that? Specially since the KHL nullified such picks precisely because said players had NHL contracts...but than you have Huberdeau drafted 5th overall lol why? Just seems pointless to me or are they really that naive?
I believe this means if there is say a lockout, the player who the team drafted would only be able to sign with them. If the player wanted to sign somewhere else, that other team would have to pay the team who used a pick to draft the players rights.
It happens because the KHL draft is largely meaningless. 95% of all the talented young Russian players are already the property of the KHL clubs youth teams at 17, other than the odd talent from a non-KHL club (like Anton Slepyshev) the draft mostly consists of the scrap left off the KHL teams protection lists.
