Mike Smith has to be in the debate for the Vezina as well. Fantastic year with an average team.

I remember reading this actual scouting report on him last season from the goalie guild. You have to click on the PDF link cos the picture's not big enough.

He's been a good butterfly goalie for the last 3 yrs that he's been a starter plus this one but in the past, he was known for being very low and leaving huge amounts of the top of the net exposed. I know nothing about goalie scouting but I observed it too especially when they were knocked out of the playoffs by Vancouver. He seems to have corrected that though.

Or average goalie with fantastic team? Defensively anyway. Look at how good Tippet made Turco and Bryzgalov look.

Look at how bad he was with Tampa.

Tippett's certainly a good coach but Smith's faced more shots per game than any other starter in the league. He hasn't had it easy. Turco only had one elite season as a starter before he fell off and was mediocre for several years under Tippett and Bryzgalov had a top end season with Gretzky as the coach too.

You can honestly say that about a TON of goaltenders. Hell, take a look around the league, the best goalies the past few years in Thomas and Lundqvist came out of nowhere. One undrafted, the other a 7th rounder. It's easily the most unpredictable position and it's exactly why most teams don't use first rounders on them. They also usually aren't ready till they're 25 or 26, not many GM's are prepared to wait that long for a early pick.

havnt seen all that many Phoenix games to be honest but thats what a good defense generally do though, make the opponent take shots from bad angles etc. it oftens equals more shots at your goal, but "easy" ones for your goalie to stop.

While it's possible that this could be true for certain teams, you're using some conjecture here as most studies have shown that good defensive teams have low shots against totals. However Tippett's teams have had low shots against totals historically so I don't think your theory would be applicable here anyways.

They are definitely 1-2, but considering the goal support that Lundqvist had compared to Quick....it's an easy call for me.
