Why is this song popular? Most people don't understand Korean. It's terrible musically. The video is mediocre. Seems like 'popular for being popular' syndrome.
Why are any well-edited and put-together videos popular?
Surprised that someone who is so proficient with videos would not be able to recognize greatness in the same area.
That was years ago, an emotional (over)reaction to an incident involving the US military killing two korean girls. Obviously a regrettable thing to speak out about, but honestly, it's pretty understandable. He has apologized, and regrets that he made such comments, so take it for what you will.
+1. This was almost 9 years ago, plus it was a form of protest vs. the US Government's policy of the war in Iraq - which by now most Americans really don't see the point of.
It's not like we are going to take rappers like Psy, Eminem or others word-for-word when they say they want to kill, shoot, etc. Apply the same standards even if the guy comes from another country.
Personally I think it is adorable how the little kids do the dance. Also I don't usually pay attention to arena music since well I'm there to watch hockey, although the one music request I'd ask is for some team any team to make this their goal song.
Just imagine it, the team scores off goes the horn then you hear, na na na na give me more give me more, it'd annoy the other teams so much and it fits as a goal song.
It's sad/funny that the only reason this gangnam guy is famous, is because of his awkward and ugly looks and the way the music video made him look goofy
he looks like a 40 year old man child and does a funny dance while rapping in a dress suit.... people who want to stick out for liking dumb things eat that **** up

Considering it is the most watched youtube video of all time, I don't think anybody likes it for the purpose of "sticking out". If anything, the opposite is true. People hate it because they want to stand out from the crowd.
Personally, I really enjoyed it and thought it was a great catchy pop tune with a silly dance...in September. At this point I am totally sick of it.
It will be heard at every sporting event, wedding, christmas party and anything to do with dancing from now until the end of time, with 3-5 children dancing excitedly to it while everyone else in the room rolls their eyes in annoyance. Get used to it.

Explain the bolded, because you just say it and walk away.
People are only allowed to not like things in an effort to "stand out"?
You're joking, right?
I don't care for the song, I don't mind it, but my opinion isn't based on any other person's. I just think it's kind of lame, contrived and unskilled. It's not great in any category except for being catchy, which seems to be the entire draw. But I like catchy music to be good, so when I actually listen to it, I realize I didn't waste my time on an empty song.
But back on topic, people notice this **** at games? Jesus, you're there to see hockey, you hear this clips for seconds at a time. We just got the league back, pick your battles.

Yeah. I don't agree.
It's a very catchy, upbeat tune that amazingly appeals to a lot of people (for some reason).
It's not, nor has ever been my bag, but to suggest that the character behind the artist is the only reason for a it's success, is ridiculous.
The dance, definitely has a part, his character does too, but it's all secondary.
We can only hope it goes the way of the macarena. No one plays that now, right ?
They showed a kid on the big screen at an OHL game I was at recently. Couldn't have been more than 6 or 7 years old. The kid broke out the macarena. Like...WTF?! Where does that come from? The song come out like 20 years before he was born!
Sometimes watching on TV I'll notice the songs playing during the stoppages, but not often. I just hate how music now is just a bunch of computerized techno crap with lyrics that aren't even saying anything. Auto tuning your voice is super old also. Anyone can auto tune their voice to the sound of an Atari game in the background and people will play it all over the radio/clubs...and sporting events. If it's a hit..it will be played. Also depends on what event your attending, if it's an NBA, or NFL game, you will hear mostly rap during the warmups.
