I sort of assumed he'd be the odd man out with Elliot and Halek playing as well as they have.

Allen gets another year in Peoria anyway, he still needs to add consistency to his game, so no point in making a decision until then. Halak's and Elliott's deals are up in 2 years, and if they both play well, one of them will become too expensive.

Another possibility, is a team coming in with a ridiculous trade offer for Elliott. One of my season ticket holder friends knows a scout with the team, and that scout believes Elliott could be trade bait. That probably means nothing, but if a team offers something crazy, maybe Army pulls the trigger.

Point is, a decision on Allen won't be made until at least next summer, not this summer.

Depends on how highly the Blues regard Karpowich, Binnington and Lundström.

I don't think they'd just give Jake Allen away, but if they were to draft a major junior goalie who will be old enough to play in the AHL next year (i.e. Michael Houser of London or Roman Will of Moncton), and if they think Karpowich can shoulder the load in Peoria next year as a rookie, then trading Allen and Stewart for Orpik fills needs for both teams.

I don't think the Blues would have a problem playing two rookies in Peoria next year, as it seems pretty clear that the Blues regard Peoria as nothing more than a convenient place to store players for quick callup in case of injury, and that they're not all that concerned with how well the Rivermen actually perform in the standings.

If they gave two hoots in Hell about the Rivermen being as good as they could possibly be, they would not have called up T.J. Hensick to sit in the press box for a month while Peoria was struggling to score goals and win games, nor would they have "loaned" Brett Sterling out to Phoenix in exchange for the butter-soft Patrick O'Sullivan, who lived up to his initials in his stint with the Rivs.

If the Blues think Karpowich has as much potential as Allen, and/or if they like the improvement they saw in both Binnington and Lundström from last year to this one, then including Allen to sweeten a deal to acquire Orpik makes sense for both teams.

Pittsburgh needs a power forward type who will stick up for his mates and can find the net without a map, and they need goaltending, if for no other reason than to push Fleury, who has looked like crap with a capital "c" in these playoffs so far.

The Blues need a physical, first-pairing LD.

It's a match made in heaven, provided that the Blues have done their homework on the younger/less-experienced goalies in the system.

if there's one thing Pittsburgh needs right now it's less defense

They could try playing hockey instead of attempting a destruction derby on ice.

Yeah, I agree. We do have a lot of promising goalie prospects, but I don't think a decision is made on Allen, until at least one of those plays good in Peoria. We may need Allen, if we lose Halak or Elliott in 2 years, as Allen would most likely be the only NHL ready goalie out of the prospects.

Bishop was the odd man out with Elliott and Halak playing as well as they have and both being locked up for two more years.

Swap Allen for a pick in the proposal, and I think we have a deal.

Or perhaps you might be interested in NHL-ready prospect Ian Cole? He could fill the hole left by dealing Orpik. It seems like the Blues don't want to go through growing pains with him for some reason.

I'm saying that if the Blues traded Perron to Pittsburgh, Orpik would be the very least I would want coming back. Penguins fans seem to think that they can get Perron for spare parts, and that ain't happening.

This Pens fan doesn't. I like Perron but I don't think scoring is the Pens problem.

We have prospects in the wings who could do better than this bunch of chumps. Also, I'd like to think Shero/Dan would go for one of Shea Weber or Ryan Suter in the off-season.

Salary cap says hello. Suter and Weber won't be on the Penguins next season.

I agree, Martin would have to be moved for that to have any chance.

Even still, that cap structure would be terrible.

Orpik has not been very good this season he really would not upgrade our defense much if any at all. To mention him as a center piece for Perron isn't even close to fair value for the Blues.
