This is the downside of 24/7 media/ social media. It's nice that people have a voice but it's breeding this new generation of people who are 'famous for being famous' instead of famous for actually having talent.
It's all you hear about now is what Joe Blow thinks about this and that. I find it cheap and annoying. Unfortunately it appeals to a very large number of people, so I only see it getting worse..

Wow, just noticed the ridiculous stunt that Duboff pulled made it into an article by Elliotte Friedman...
Quote:
26. The Winnipeg Jets had a small brush fire this week when a "fan" called media members with details about a conversation he claimed he had with head coach Claude Noel. One newspaper printed the story, featuring critical comments about the likes of Nik Antropov, Alexander Burmistrov and Jason Jaffray. If you ever want to know why sometimes people are rude to fans, well, this is it.
27. As for the quotes, the players themselves will know if they are accurate or not based on what's been said to them in the past. Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff probably had to speak to a few agents. Asked one (clients not involved) what he would do. He said that in some of the worst cases, if he believed it to be true, he'd ask for a trade.
Winnipeg is still the same biggest small town I remember. That kind of dynamic will and has hurt this team. This story hurt Noel. I'm sure there is some figment of truth to it (how much is certainly questionable). But rumours are also hurting Kane. Here's a thought for those big mouths who like to go to the press - keep it under your lid!
Some people have bad days and say/do things they might regret. It's not always newsworthy. With the advent of technology, I'm sure we'll find Kane or Burmi on someone's Facebook soon. Thank god it wasn't around when the ol' Jets were here. I used to see those boys regularly in the city and on the road and I have stories that would floor you all. The stories and the rumours that come with them ran a lot of players out of town (and big names you wouldn't expect). I am sure you all have stories as well from the Oak, the A and from the PPI. But keep those old stories and the new ones to yourselves.
Look at the Boston Red Sox and the scandal over there. Do we need that here? I hope the new younger fans, particularly girls who love their pics taken with the players can keep the chatter down. But obviously we're not just talking about girls, we also need to include the almost retired teachers in the city and anyone else who need to feel like they should be on page 1. Nothing good ever comes from being on page 1. Trust me - I know lots of people who have been on page 1 but I certainly won't mention who they are.
lmao at the absurdity of how the article made its way into the Globe. Even my old high school paper had a stronger vetting process. Hopefully no internal strife made with any of the guys mentioned, some of the comments on the ridiculous side. And Duboff gives off the scent of stalker, creeping on him during breakfast, yeesh. Can be used as future selling point to free agents "in a small market, it's easier to spot the creepers"

That's already happened. It's been happening all year. Honestly, this bunch is smart enough not to get themselves in too much trouble where iPhones are around, and I don't think 99% of Winnipeggers care anyway. People know when to smirk and look the other way -- unless they already have a negative perception of someone for whatever reason, valid or false.
I'm not even worried about the reaction this story got in terms of hurting Noel. Almost universally people were critical of Duboff and the G&M for printing it, and nothing THAT significant was said. It just looks more scandalous because it's packaged as "insider" talk and paraphrased. It will be long forgotten by September.
How did the article even get printed by the Globe and Mail? Doesn't Thomson own it or part of it? You think he could just kill the article before it printed. Especially since it's not really actual "news" and it doesn't serve any purpose for the Jets or TNSE. Kinda funny that one of Noel's "claims" is that Thomson is a such a wonderful owner...hmmm? Who the heck gives all the credit to the company owner? Did Thomson plant this article?

I agree it was extremely shoddy journalism, but I highly doubt David Thomson micromanages what stories get printed in the Globe and Mail.
Cheveldayoff and I were in adjacent toilet stalls at the Marion and shared a conversation during our time in there, expect a similar story to run in The Sun tomorrow.

No. Just... no. I don't even want to get into it but just please understand the answer to everything here is "no."

If the Globe and Mail was found to have killed a story to help their owner they would instantely lose any credibility as a news source. It would hurt them WAY more than this story did (which is not at all)
